Kingston is seeing revitalization through Live HealthSmart Alabama
Tucked between Avondale and Woodlawn is the northeast Birmingham community of Kingston. The neighborhood was named after Peyton King, an 1800s settler, resident and attorney in Birmingham. Local initiatives like Live HealthSmart Alabama, Blank Space Birmingham, The Kingston Coalition and the Kingston Neighborhood Association have teamed up to breathe new life into this small community. Kingston's population had steadily declined, and schools, businesses and grocery stores closed shortly after. Live HealthSmart Alabama listened to the community and worked to transform the neighborhood with improved sidewalks, wheelchair-accessible street ramps, new bus shelters, improved lighting in hard-to-see areas, landscaping and colorful murals.
Kingston Park features new murals, and East Lake Park offers fishing
As a part of the Live HealthSmart Alabama's Kingston project, Stockham Park has received a complete makeover. Together with Blank Space Bham, they covered the neighborhood park in colorful murals with messages that resonate with the community. Unity-centered phrases like "welcome to the barbecue" and "fly high and set the pace" were painted throughout the area to offer encouragement to residents. And the residents of Kingston offered encouragement right back, bringing food and drinks to those working on the park's new murals. Stockham Park features a covered picnic area, perfect for community gatherings, sports facilities and a playground for little ones. Just minutes from there is the beautiful East Lake Park. Locals can go fishing at the park's pier, play a friendly game of tennis or walk along the trail that loops around the park's stunning lake. The lake is a prime fishing spot and a beautiful setting for picnics, evening strolls or just sitting on the dock and watching the sunset over the water.
A mobile market brings fresh produce to the community
Live HealthSmart Alabama also addressed the fact that Kingston was a food desert. The program brought healthy and affordable food to the area with its Mobile Market, which visits the area on a weekly basis. Shoppers can get proteins, fruits, vegetables, grains and other healthy foods. While Kingston is home to the fast-food chain Boston Seafood, all of the great dining options of the neighboring Woodlawn and Avondale communities are just minutes away. Popular spots like Sammy's Sandwich Shop and SluttyVegan in Woodlawn, as well as Cahaba Brewing Company in East Avondale, are easy for Kingston residents to access. Beyond that, all the exciting attractions of Downtown Birmingham are just 3 miles away.
Craftsman-style and ranch-style homes provide affordable options
Craftsman-style homes are the dominant style in the area, with ranch-style homes also making frequent appearances. Home prices range from $12,500 to $135,000. Because of the neighborhood's location next to Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, residents may encounter noise from airplanes as they take off and land.
Hayes K-8 and historic Woodlawn High serve local students
Dupuy Alternative School is located in Kingston for any students who may need extra help. Otherwise, children in the area can attend Hayes K-8 School, which receives a C-minus rating from Niche and serves both the elementary and middle school grades. Next, students can attend Woodlawn High School, which also holds a C-minus. Alum Tony Nathan was the first Black football player at the school. Birmingham native filmmakers, the Erwin Brothers, brought his story to the big screen in their 2015 film "Woodlawn."
