Liberty Highlands
Standout southern cooking and retail options within a few miles
Liberty Heights has a few local businesses, such as Las Macarenas, a small Hispanic-owned grocery store that carries fresh produce and tortillas. Some residents do their shopping in Trussville, about 3 miles north, where there are big-box stores and a Winn-Dixie. Trussville also has several dining options, including Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q, a regional chain restaurant that serves smoked pork and brisket with a choice of tomato-based, Carolina-style or honey habanero sauces. “They’ve got a lot of items on their menu, and they’re all good,” says Jerry Tortorigi, a Realtor with Tortorigi Properties, who has lived in the area for more than 40 years. In the city of Irondale, about 5 miles southwest, there’s a Publix and a handful of restaurants. Irondale’s most widely known landmark is the Irondale Café, which first opened in 1928. The stories of the women who ran it after World War II were adapted into the 1991 film, “Fried Green Tomatoes.” Today, the café’s cooks still dish up Southern food like buttermilk-battered fried chicken and, of course, fried green tomatoes. From skeet shooting to hiking the Appalachian Mountains
At the Southern Skeet & Trap Club in Liberty Highlands, young people can take free skeet-shooting lessons, and adults can use the range to hone their aim. There are also a few parks within a short drive of Liberty Highlands. Hikers can explore the 14 miles of trails on Ruffner Mountain, whose trailhead and nature center are about 7 miles from most neighborhood homes. Irondale and Trussville both have city parks with playgrounds and picnic areas. On hot Alabama summer days, Tortorigi says that many Jefferson County people take day trips to the 17,000-acre Logan Martin Lake, about 40 miles east, where they can waterski, fish and swim.Horse racing, Christmas lights and the Alabama State Fair
One of the busiest spots in the neighborhood is the Birmingham Race Course Casino, which sees a steady stream of activity throughout the year. The casino also hosts an annual drive-through holiday light show called Lights of Noel — the largest of its kind in Alabama. Each September, more than 200,000 visitors come to the Alabama State Fair, where they can ride the Ferris wheel, watch daredevil motorcycle acts and cheer for racing capuchin monkeys. In downtown Trussville, “There are events all the time — especially in summer,” Tortorigi says. Gatherings include an end-of-summer Dog Daze celebration and a Christmas parade — most of them take place less than 6 miles from Liberty Highlands.Ranch-style homes from the 1980s
Though much of the community’s land is covered by warehouses, highways and forests, there are a few ranch-style homes tucked away in small, wooded developments. Many of the residences were built in the 1980s, and they rest on properties that are about a quarter-acre in size. These houses — which generally have two or three bedrooms — tend to list from $175,000 to $215,000. Some areas of the community are at elevated risk of flooding, and lenders may require flood insurance for homes in flood zones.Birmingham City Schools and Jefferson County Schools
The neighborhood is split between two school districts: Birmingham City Schools and Jefferson County Schools. Jefferson County students may begin at Irondale Community School, which earns a C Niche score. At Irondale Community, a house system encourages community by placing children into one of five houses, named for values such as integrity and compassion. Irondale Middle School rates a C-plus. At A-minus-rated Shades Valley High School, the Mounties and Lady Mounties compete in 20 varsity-level sports, including wrestling, bowling and swimming.Commute by car in this Alabama neighborhood
Liberty Highlands is a car-dependent community with access to several major roads. Proximity to U.S. Route 78 and Interstates 20 and 459 allows commuters to get to and from Birmingham, which is about 14 miles west. For farther travel, residents can drive 10 miles to the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, where they can catch direct flights to more than 20 U.S. cities. Emergency care is available less than 4 miles away at the Ascension St. Vincent’s East hospital, a Level III Trauma Center.
