Tornado stricken community comes back strong
North Pratt residents are part of a resilient community that worked through tough times and came out even stronger on the other side. On April 27, 2011, a tornado tore through much of Birmingham. Pratt City fell directly in the tornado’s path and was one of the most devastated areas. "After the tornado hit, we started to build back what we lost," says North Pratt Neighborhood Association President Michelle Perkins. Years later, the city’s rebuilding and revitalization efforts can be seen everywhere, with new homes and beautiful new parks.

Pedestrian friendly residential streets
Craftsman cottages with stately columns, two-story prairie houses with inviting front porches and side-gabled, brick ranch-style homes make up the housing stock in North Pratt. Home prices range from $120,000 to $170,000, with new homes being built to rejuvenate the area. Residential streets are pedestrian-friendly, though trees in this area are sparse, making for sunny neighborhood strolls. "It's a very quiet neighborhood, with mostly older people," Perkins says. "Though with the new constructions, younger people are coming in."

New park filled with unique amenities
One Pratt Place was a park constructed by the same builders who created the famous Railroad Park. "It's an amazing, beautiful park," says Tresha Moore, who works in Public Relations for Birmingham's Parks and Recreation department. The entire cost of the park was funded by CDBG Disaster Recovery grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. These grants also improved surrounding streets and repaired the damaged library. "It's bringing a feeling of safety. There are trees and walking paths, and in the summer, there's a splash pad for the kids," adds Perkins. "It's making the neighborhood prettier. People come for picnics; there are food trucks – it's nice." The 6-acre park has a lot to offer the community. There are large playgrounds, hammock stands, a 200-seat amphitheater and an outdoor LED screen. Amid the park is the 4,500-square-foot activity building, which features a catering kitchen and meeting spaces. A large, colorful map of Pratt can be found at the trellis-covered plaza. The map details Pratt's storied mining history and natural features. For an outstanding view of the area, there's an iconic overlook tower in the park's northwest corner. Nearby is the revamped library. Residents can check out the latest bestseller and read out in the library's beautiful garden.
