Oakwood Place
Single-family homes starting at $20,000
Oakwood Place is part of the West End area of Birmingham and is mainly residential, boasting small, single-level homes sitting on large, fenced-in yards next to thin sidewalks. “West End tends to be an investor-friendly area of town,” says Jeremy Galloway, Realtor with eXp Realty, LLC Central. “Properties are at a better cap rate than other areas of Birmingham. Most buyers are gonna be investors.” Homes in the area were built around 1947 and are in the ranch, bungalow and Arts and Crafts styles. Many homes feature porches used to sit and socialize during hot summer days. Homes range in price from $20,000 to $120,000. “There is lots of renovation in the area,” says Watkins. “The neighborhood is part of a revitalization plan in Birmingham.” Neighborhoods in the West End are undergoing a mixed-use development effort by the city of Birmingham. The CAP Index crime score is a 5 out of 10, with a homicide average of 8 and an assault with a deadly weapon average of 7. The national average is 4. The local West End nonprofit organization, Urban Ministry, has several programs that help to support the West End community, such as a pay what you can café and a home renovation and rental program.Commuters use bus stops, and Route 11

Mario’s Ice Cream, a local ice cream truck, travels around the neighborhood, serving sweet treats to locals. “There’s mostly retail stuff and common McDonald’s and KFC, not really a lot of local eateries over there in the West End,” says Galloway. More dining and shopping experiences can be found in the Fair Park area along Route 11. Nearby is 5 Points West Shopping City, where locals can visit popular retailers or grab a bite to eat at Subway. Groceries can be found at the local Piggly Wiggly.Harrison Park and WE Gardens
Harrison Park features well-manicured green space with walking trails and a playground. There are also tennis courts for pick-up games. Near Elmwood Cemetery is Woodward Park, a large green area with a jungle gym for kids to play and a baseball diamond. During the summer, residents may take a dip in the swimming pool.
