A true community in Birmingham’s suburbs
First developed in 1887 by the Beneficial Land and Improvement Company, Powderly has evolved into a large family-oriented and senior-friendly neighborhood. The area offers plentiful housing among the trees and hills of Birmingham while still maintaining a strong sense of community and assistance. This can range from the community gardens attended by locals to the community gatherings around parks and recreation centers. The area is a drive away from shopping and dining but offers quick access to parks and schools to make it a truly residential area. “Everyone that I see from the area is very easy to get along with and welcoming; it really is a great community,” says Megan Green, the branch manager at the Powderly Branch Library.

Powderly’s Brick Craftsman and bungalows
There are plenty of housing options in Powderly as it is a “primarily residential neighborhood,” Green says. Homebuyers can select from a variety of full-brick, ranch-style houses, Craftsman homes and bungalows. Many houses were built in the early to mid-1900s, with many keeping parts from the original construction. Home prices range from $40,000 to $155,000, depending on size and whether recent renovations have been made to the residence. Houses throughout the neighborhood are also commonly set in the front of the lawn to allow for larger backyard space and ample room for a driveway, all under the shade of mature oak trees.

Locals can access Amtrak at the station in downtown Birmingham, 6 miles away. The Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is 13 miles to the north of the neighborhood for trips unreachable by car or train. The Princeton Baptist Medical Center is also located 4 miles to the north of the neighborhood for medical care.

Wiggins Park’s fun and events
Locals can often be seen practicing their swing at one of Cooper Green Park’s seven baseball fields or cooling off at the Cooper Green Swimming Pool. Wiggins Park is another park near the neighborhood that also offers a large space for both events and organizations. The Powderly Branch Library and Wiggins Park Rec Center share the space, meaning there is plenty of room for such annual events as the Valentine's Day Ball, which “hundreds of kids went to this year,” Green says. Locals can also enjoy outdoor events, like Jazz in the Park in July. For more annual events, locals can head to downtown Birmingham and join in the fun, like competing for the best recipe in the city at the Gumbo Gala.

Children’s Village
While the crime rate in Powderly has a higher crime rate than other neighborhoods in the Birmingham area, local institutions like the Children’s Village works to help and heal those in the area. The village is a temporary home for children ages six to 18 who have broken families, suffered abuse, been neglected or orphaned. For over half a century, the property has housed hundreds of children. Children’s Village doesn’t just put a roof over their heads--they work to provide a warm and nurturing environment and set them up for success.
