Close-knit historic community
Atop Red Mountain, overlooking downtown Birmingham, Alabama, sits Redmont Park, a picturesque, historic neighborhood with quiet, undulating streets and vintage homes that are both grand and charming in equal measure. Considered one of the most popular and sought-after neighborhoods in the city, Redmont Park's residents share a strong sense of community pride, as well as a commitment to the preservation of their leafy enclave, which occupies a coveted spot on the National Register of Historic Places. "The closeness of the community is unique," says Jay Reed, 10-year Redmont Park resident and former Redmont Park Neighborhood Association president. "It's a diverse neighborhood, and it's neat to see the representation of every walk of life coming together to preserve the historic nature of the neighborhood." According to Reed, it's not just the bi-annual Redmont Park potluck dinner that's heavily attended by his neighbors. Folks are apt to gather for the monthly neighborhood association meetings, too. "Some associations don't exactly gather a crowd, but that's not the case with Redmont Park." Most residents are keen to regularly participate in association design reviews or consider new zoning ordinances. "We really seek to do what's best for the neighborhood," Reed says. "No one really understands how tight our community is until they move in. It's just special."

Lovely early 20th century homes
Redmont Park features an array of lovely single-family homes, many built between 1911 and 1935, with a mix of styles, from stately colonial and Spanish Revival to quaint Tudor Revival and English Cottage. Home seekers will find that some Redmont Park homes have specific historical significance, having been designed and built in the 1920s by Carolyn Cortner Smith, Alabama's first woman architect. In addition to single-family homes, Redmont Park offers a choice of townhomes and condominiums, several occupying classic, Federal-style brick buildings. Sizes of Redmont Park dwellings range from 800 to 4,100 square feet with two to five bedrooms, and prices span from $230,000 to $2.1 million.

Mountain top overlooks and nearby botanical gardens
Quiet and secluded, Redmont Park's leafy, winding residential streets make for a serene and atmospheric walk. While out for their afternoon stroll, residents can head to the neighborhood's High Point Overlook to take in the fantastic view of downtown. More nature — actually, a lot of it — is spread over 65 lush acres at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, where visitors find 30 thematic gardens scattered throughout, along with the only public horticultural library in the country. Directly west of the botanical gardens is the Birmingham Zoo, one of the city's top attractions. At the zoo, visitors can marvel at — and learn about — more than 180 species from six continents.

Historic dining and shopping district
For a bite to eat and a bit of shopping, nearby English Village, a 75-year-old commercial district on the southern slope of Red Mountain, is just the spot. Continental Bakery features delectable homemade bread, pastries, cakes and pies. At the bakery's sister café next door, Chez Lulu, patrons enjoy salads, sandwiches and hand-tossed pizza in an atmospheric French café setting. At Vino, the tasty Mediterranean fare is accompanied by a modern vibe and an impressive wine selection. Not only do bakeries and bistros line English Village's Cahaba Road, there are also local businesses and several unique shops, including Prints Charming SoHo, which sells an eclectic collection of antique prints, books, stained glass windows, home décor and more. For women's apparel, accessories and personal styling, there's Lé Weekend, and Little Hardware has been supplying English Village customers with home improvement products and services since 1946.

Proximity to thoroughfares and downtown
With no public transit in the near vicinity, Redmont Park commuters are reliant on their cars to get around town. However, the Elton B. Stephens Expressway is mere minutes from the neighborhood, making the drive to other parts of the city, like downtown Birmingham or the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, easily accomplished. "Aside from the historical nature of the neighborhood, its location is one of the things that attracted me to Redmont Park," Reed says. "It's 5 minutes from any major artery to take you anywhere around town you want to go."
