A tight-knit community under 10 miles from Birmingham
If one word had to be used to describe Birmingham's Roebuck neighborhood, it would be tight-knit. "Many families have been living in the area for generations, meaning neighbors are likely to know and care about each other," says Leanne Townsend, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty. Townsend has sold homes across Birmingham for nearly five years. "This close community feel isn't always easy to find, making Roebuck a truly special place to put down roots." Roebuck is also very diverse, with many artists, musicians and other creative types calling it home. Its older homes make for a charming setting just minutes from Ruffner Mountain.

Observing the rare Watercress Darter at Hawkins Park
Within Roebuck exists one of the world's rarest species of fish. The watercress darter is federally endangered and is only found within Jefferson County. Hawkins Park is one of only five places where the fish is known to live. The Freshwater Land Trust, the City of Birmingham and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have partnered on a restoration project to protect these rare creatures. Together, they've worked to replace some of the asphalt surrounding the spring and replacing it with bioretention areas and bioswales, allowing cleaner and healthier water to enter the spring. The Hawkins Park Recreation Center features sports facilities like basketball and tennis courts. The recreation center also hosts Zumba classes, language lessons and guitar school. The nearby Roebuck Municipal Golf Course sits on Hawkins Park's west side. The 18-hole course has served the community since 1911, initially as the Roebuck Springs Country Club.
