Roebuck Springs
Suburban Neighborhood in Birmingham, Alabama
Jefferson County 35206, 35210
Country lanes and historic homes
Roebuck Springs was one of the earliest neighborhoods in Birmingham to have a road system and the first to have its own golf course. Winding roads were designed to mimic the narrow country lanes of rural England, with no curbs, gutters or sidewalks. There's an abundance of native vegetation, terraced hillsides with stone walls and tree canopies that shade lovely historic homes. "It's a nationally registered historic neighborhood that started in 1910 as vacation homes for the wealthy," says Alan Boshell, Realtor with ERA King and longtime resident of Roebuck Springs. "It's a very diverse community nowadays; there are multigenerational residents mixed in with new arrivals like young professionals and families." Home buyers will find brick ranch-style houses, postwar split-levels, Tudor and colonial revivals. Prices range from $160,000 for two-bedroom homes on smaller lots to $320,000 for four-bedroom homes on acre-sized lots.Architecture programs at Huffman High School
Martha Gaskins Elementary School, home of the Griffins, receives a C-minus rating on Niche. Huffman Middle receives a D-plus. Huffman High School, which received a C-minus, is home to around 1,200 students and a spacious 16-acre athletic complex. In addition to sports, the school's Academy of Architecture and Construction helps students build skills for careers in architecture, design, welding and carpentry.Learn and play at Hawkins Park and Ruffner Mountain
Hawkins Park and Recreation Center are part of a 4-square-mile green space on the northwest border of Roebuck Springs, on the other side of Interstate 59. There are basketball and tennis courts, and locals can attend Zumba workout classes and learn to speak new languages in the park's rec center. The Roebuck Municipal Golf Course sits on the west side of the park. The 18-hole course was private when it opened in 1911, but after the 1929 stock market crash, the city purchased the course and opened it to the public. In recent years, working with federal authorities and a nonprofit organization, the community has restored Hawkins Park's natural habitats to save the endangered watercress darter fish. Ruffner Mountain is on the other side of the neighborhood. In addition to a network of 12 trails covering the 1,000-acre nature preserve, the site includes a nature center with exhibits about the mountain's native birds, bats, squirrels and amphibians.Retro burgers and pool hall vibes at Iron City Billiards and Milo's
Roebuck Springs is a predominately residential community with virtually no businesses in the neighborhood. On the other side of I-59, however, folks can shop for groceries and other essentials at national retailers such as Walmart and Aldi. Nearby Iron City Billiards is advertised as the largest pool hall in Alabama and serves classic pub grub. Along Route 11, Milo's Hamburgers has been serving burgers with a beloved secret sauce since the 1940s, when U.S. Army veteran Milo Carlton opened the joint upon completing his military service as a mess cook. Gabrella Manor is a historic, ivy-covered Spanish colonial estate on five acres that is popular for weddings and other celebrations. Birmingham Race Course Casino, a mile east of the neighborhood in the hills of Ruffner Mountain, hosts greyhound races.Quick access to downtown Birmingham and Trussville
Roebuck Springs is bounded on the northwest by Interstate 59. Parallel to the interstate, Route 11 connects to retail centers and the nearby satellite city of Trussville. Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority MAX buses also run along Route 11. Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is around 7 miles west down I-59, offering nonstop flights to 15 cities nationwide.High crime next-door
Roebuck Springs' CAP crime score is the same as the national average, but its southern neighbor, Eastlake, has a notably high score of 8.Cooler temps and historic churches
Residents find this neighborhood a bit cooler than other areas thanks to its location in the hills of Ruffner Mountain, which peaks at 1200 feet. Several churches are in and around the community. Wilson Chapel and Cemetery, built in 1916, is now home to a longtime Methodist congregation. The Alabama Historical Commission gave it landmark status in 1989.
