New subdivisions near nature, universities and golf courses
Tucked in the forested foothills of the Southern Appalachians, Sand Ridge has beauty to spare. The gentle slopes of Red Mountain rise to the north while the tidy fairways of Oxmoor Valley, a stop on the Robert Trent Jones Golf (RTJ) Trail, roll through the center of the neighborhood. Ten miles from The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Sand Ridge is dotted with new subdivisions. “What’s nice about the developments is that they’re close to Samford University in Homewood and to UAB, so that when residents for the hospitals come in, a lot of them land here,” says Amy Pewitt, a Realtor with Flat Fee Real Estate Birmingham and a longtime local. “If they have young kids or they are here for professional reasons, these homes are newer and have HOAs, so it can benefit busy lifestyles.”

With the exception of a few older ranch-style homes, most properties are within planned subdivisions, including Oxmoor Village, Oxmoor Ridge and The Grand, all with HOA fees. Prices range from $275,000 to about $480,000. “It’s mainly single-family homes,” says Pewitt, but condos and townhomes are popular with older buyers ready to downsize. Townhomes in the Oxmoor Ridge and Oxmoor Clubhouse communities run from $245,000 to $369,000.

Red Mountain Park & The RTJ Golf Trail at Oxmoor Valley
Iron-ore mining fueled the development of Birmingham, and much of that mining occurred at Red Mountain. The ore mined here is hematite, and its presence contributes to the fine red dust that gives the mountain its name. The last mine here closed in the 1960s. Mining ruins are now part of Red Mountain Park, a 1,500-acre green space beside Sand Ridge. “The park is incredibly popular with residents in the nearby communities and across the greater metro area, with approximately 120,000 visitors each year,” says Janet Simpson, COO at Jefferson County Greenways Coalition, which oversees Red Mountain. The park is open for hiking, trail running and mountain biking, and there’s a dog park.
Oxmoor Valley is a golf facility on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, which links 11 courses across Alabama. Scenic forests, numerous creeks and challenging elevation changes are hallmarks of the Oxmoor Valley courses, which were also built on former mining lands. A shelf of exposed shale, which supports the 3rd hole on the Ridge course, gives a nod to this mining past. The Valley course was completely renovated in 2021. The 9-hole Back Yard is a nine-hole walking course.
