Smithfield Estates
Suburban Neighborhood in Birmingham, Alabama
Jefferson County 35117, 35207, 35214

Split-Levels and raised ranch-style homes
Smithfield Estates is a mix of older Split-Levels, Bi-Levels, and regular and raised ranch-style homes. Homebuyers enjoy paved driveways, while most boast one-to-two-car garages. Properties can sell for under $100,000 for a serious fixer-upper, while move-in ready homes sell between the lower and upper $200,000s. The community also features a new subdivision with modern, traditional Craftsman-influenced homes along Clemon Drive, with prices ranging from mid to high $200,000s. Some streets offer paved sidewalks, but many do not. However, residents can easily stroll along these quiet streets, as the community earns a 3 out of 10 crime score according to the CAP Index.Afternoons at One Pratt Park
Smithfield Estates Park is tucked behind houses on Huntington Place. This secluded park has a playground for the kids to enjoy, a basketball court and a pavilion. Forestdale Park and One Pratt Park are short distances, but the latter stands out. One Pratt Park was built as a revitalization effort after the destruction experienced during the April 2011 tornado. At One Pratt Park, locals can enjoy walking paths, multiple playgrounds and a splash pad to escape the summer heat. “It was a major improvement for the neighborhood and is attracting more visitors to Pratt,” says North Pratt Neighborhood Association President Michelle Perkins. There’s also an outdoor amphitheater for concerts and a tranquil reading garden blooming with native plants, along with the Birmingham Public Library Pratt City Branch right next door.C-rated schools in Birmingham
The Birmingham City School District serves the students of Smithfield Estates, scoring below-average ratings on Niche. Kindergarten through eighth grade students may attend the C-minus rated South Hampton K-8 School. South Hampton K-8 was originally South Hampton Elementary before it merged with Daniel Payne Middle School in 2013. Students then move on to Jackson-Olin High School, which also scores a C-minus on Niche and has one of the district’s largest Career Technical Education Departments and the Academy of Health Sciences. Regarding higher education, “Downtown Birmingham is home to numerous schools like Birmingham Southern College, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the historic Miles College,” says Dana Belcher, Realtor with Re/Max on Main, who has nearly 20 years of experience in the industry.Neighborly chatter at the farmers market
Residents of Smithfield Estates have a quick drive to a range of annual events and festivals in downtown Birmingham, such as the Alabama Farmers Market. Open year-round, Monday through Sunday, locals can peruse a range of fresh produce or eclectic finds at the flea market. The market is also home to an onsite restaurant, making it a fun retreat any day of the week.Downtown commutes via Highway 78
Smithfield Estates is located off Cherry Avenue, while Daniel Payne Drive also serves as a thoroughfare in the neighborhood. The area is car-dependent, with nearby access to Highway 78 and Interstates 22 and 65. Public transit options are found in neighboring North Platt along Hibernian Street. Sitting just 6 miles from downtown Birmingham, nearby amenities include the Princeton Baptist Medical Center under 5 miles away and the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. The neighborhood is also home to houses of worship like Bethel Baptist Church.Shops and eateries along Highway 78
Numerous shopping and dining options are available along Highway 78. Locals can grab groceries at the Piggly Wiggly in the Village Hills Shopping Center or head to Family Dollar. Residents can also grab discounted bakery items along Daniel Payne Drive at the Nature’s Own Bakery Outlet. Along with numerous fast-food chains, retailers like Ace Hardware, Ollie’s Bargain Outlet, and Walmart Supercenter are nearby. However, a short drive leads to restaurants like Jasmine’s Cafe for delicious soul food and Niki’s West for classic Southern fare. Those in the mood for a margarita can head to Los Rancheros Mexican Grill in Forestdale or explore more dining options downtown.
