Railroad tracks run along the community's northern border, which results in some ambient noise for nearby residents. Pre-war bungalows and post-war ranch-style homes feature covered front porches. South Pratt's heavy industry and location within a flood plain have resulted in pollution and development issues. However, the South Pratt neighborhood association and local government institutions are working to improve conditions. Richard Harris, the President of the South Pratt neighborhood association and lifelong South Pratt resident, says, "The neighborhood association does a lot to help. Right now, there is a grant being put together by us, UAB and the Jefferson County Health Department to get some help in the community."
