Titusville perfectly represents Birmingham's rich history of perseverance. The neighborhood's story started just after the Civil War when a collective of freed, formerly enslaved people founded it. It was one of the first neighborhoods where Black people were allowed to own property; it was where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. penned his letter from a Birmingham jail; and it's been the home of prominent Black figures like Condoleezza Rice, William Bell and Wallace Rayfield. Community isn't just a word in Titusville; it's a way of life. This feeling is everywhere, from reunions in the park to a local coffee shop that helps homeless people build a life for themselves.

Titusville Day brings neighbors together
Locals can browse the aisles of the Titusville Branch of the Birmingham Public Library to find something enticing to read. The library also hosts a chess club, arts & crafts workshops, book clubs and senior fitness classes. Memorial Park, where the famous Black Baron baseball team once practiced, remains a focal point for the community. Locals enjoy open, grassy fields, baseball diamonds and a swimming pool here. The adjacent recreation center has plenty of sporting facilities and meeting spaces. Community events are held here frequently: Jazz in the Park, Trans Day of Visibility and Titusville Day among them."Titusville Day is an event created by the neighborhood association," says former North Titusville Neighborhood Association President John Harris. "People come out, meet and greet each other and have a good time. There are people who grew up here who come from all over for a reunion with their neighbors." Harris would know; he's lived in Titusville his entire life. "It's a great place to live. We have lots of activities throughout the neighborhood that bring folks together," Harris adds.

Coffee with a side of community
The Modern House Coffee Shop provides much more than caffeine to Titusville. Troy Whetstone founded the café to help the area's homeless people. The nonprofit shop employs homeless people, paying them a livable wage and providing them with financial literacy classes, nutrition classes and a life coach. This 12-to-14-month program offers vulnerable people the stepping stones they need to become financially independent, employed community members. Coffee is roasted and donated by Seeds Coffee Company, which decided to partner with Modern House out of love for its mission. People come for the delicious coffee and incredible baked goods made by Chef Marcus, but stay for fun events like open mics and wellness workshops.Another local favorite is Audrey's. Their barbecue is acclaimed, as they've won several local and regional competitions. Soul food staples like gumbo, fried turkey and jambalaya are all other popular menu items. Meanwhile, the Golden Flake factory sits right off I-65. Visitors can tour the factory for free and see first-hand how these iconic pork skins are made. Plus, tour-goers get to leave with their own free bag of Golden Flakes!
