Country West has custom homes and longtime neighbors near the highway
On the far northwest side of Bismarck, Country West offers a tranquil escape from the more populated parts of the city. The neighborhood's leafy subdivisions, expansive homes and low crime attract long-term residents who want strong community ties. "People just don't sell their houses there," says Austin Muth, co-founding Realtor of Genesis Realty. "People live their whole lives in those homes, so most of them already know each other." Yet even though neighbors are tight-knit, the community still welcomes change. "My cousin was able to buy a home there, and when he moved in, the neighbors threw a block party so they could all get to know him," Muth says. Additionally, new construction opens more opportunities for people to enjoy the neighborhood's peaceful atmosphere while remaining near commercial centers, major roads and schools.
The neighborhood's CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, significantly lower than the national score of 4.
Contemporary subdivisions join older homes on leafy streets
Custom homes from the 1970s and 1980s give Country West its character. "It has a very old-school vibe," Muth says. "They just don't make homes like those anymore. Even high-end houses in other parts of the city just aren't made the same." Architectural features differentiate ranch-style homes, split-level houses and estate-like properties on spacious lots. Mature trees bring shade, privacy and natural beauty to the community's long, winding roads and rolling hills. Older homes rarely go on the market, so listed properties aren't available for long. "My wife and I actually bid on a house over there, and it immediately had 11 other bids," Muth says. Further into the neighborhood, subdivisions built within the past decade have more availability. Architecture is more homogenous and contemporary, but lots remain spacious, and trees still dot front yards. Older homes typically cost between $320,000 and $680,000, while new construction ranges between $500,000 and $900,000. Some estates can cost up to $1.4 million.
Neighborhood parks have themed playgrounds, trails and river views
Valley Drive Greenway Trail is the neighborhood's short bike trail connecting to New Generations Park. This primary park has a Wild West playground, picnic shelters and a summertime splash pad. Nearby, Elk Ridge Park has tennis and pickleball courts and a complex jungle gym. Other neighborhood parks include Promontory Point Park and Igoe Park. Bordering the community, Pioneer Park has both wooded and riverside hiking trails, bike rentals and sand volleyball courts. Visitors can climb a nearby hill to admire flower gardens and sprawling views of the Missouri River.
Public schools and North Dakota’s Polytechnic Institute are nearby
Students attend either Elk Ridge Elementary or Centennial Elementary School, which are both near the community. Elk Ridge is currently unrated by Niche, and Centennial has a B-plus rating. Students then attend Horizon Middle School, which has a B-plus, followed by the A-rated Century High School. The high school's medical careers department offers courses in nursing, athletic injury prevention and medical terminology. The neighborhood is directly north of Bismarck State College, the state's first and only polytechnic institute. Its degrees range from agriculture and health sciences to manufacturing and renewable energy.
Drivers use the main roads to reach Business Loop 94
Although locals can stroll and bike along the sidewalks on residential streets, most people drive around the area. Century Avenue and Tyler Parkway are the main roads in and out of the neighborhood. Drivers are less than 1 mile from Business Loop 94, a major highway crossing the Missouri River into Mandan. The nearest hospital is 5 miles away, and the Bismarck Municipal Airport is 8 miles away.
A corner of Country West has a large outlet mall
Pinehurst Square outlet mall, between Century Avenue and Business Loop 94, is the nearest shopping hub. Major stores include Lowe's Home Improvement, Best Buy, Old Navy and T.J. Maxx. There are also several national dining chains, like Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Texas Roadhouse, Starbucks and Cold Stone Creamery. Mayas offers classic Mexican fare, while Kobe's Japanese Steak House and Sushi Bar specializes in hibachi dinners. The nearest grocery store is Family Fare Supermarket on the other side of the highway.
