Bismarck residents live less than 15 minutes from the downtown retail hub
Although Downtown Bismarck is the geographical core of North Dakota’s capital, it’s not the only busy commercial center in the city. “In Bismarck, it’s not hard to get anywhere,” says Ann Andre, a broker associate at eXp Realty who’s sold homes all over the city. “It’s not like living in a bigger metropolitan area where you live in a specific area and shop in the specific area.” And yet, downtown still asserts itself as a retail epicenter. People living in any part of the city can reach its restaurants, boutique shops and event venues in less than 15 minutes. Even locals from Mandan, the next big city across the Missouri River, drive no more than 20 minutes to explore the neighborhood and attend annual events. Pedestrian-friendly streets and a major highway are near homes, popular parks and Kirkwood Mall, another regional shopping destination.
Downtown Bismarck has shops, restaurants and Kirkwood Mall access
Downtown’s commercial scene is full of variety. “We have restaurants opening constantly,” says Crystal Neumann, a city native and broker/owner of CORE Real Estate Advisors. “More chains, like Panda Express and IHOP, but also a bunch of little local businesses.” Each block is packed with cafes, quick-service eateries, bars and sit-down restaurants. Boutique clothing shops and antique stores sit beside tattoo parlors and art galleries. Kirkwood Mall is directly south of the bustling retail hub, attracting even more shoppers to the area. Although the neighborhood has specialty shops like Asian Gourmet Market Store, supermarkets are about 1 mile away.
Annual events hosted in the heart of Bismarck
Most city events happen downtown. Restaurants battle throughout January to win the "Best Burger" title during the Downtown Burger Slam. The annual Art & Wine Walk invites people to sample wine and hors d'oeuvres while exploring local businesses and artists in June. Fall brings the Downtowner’s Street Fair, where tens of thousands browse food, art and craft vendors. Small Business Saturdays promote local entrepreneurs. Bismarck Event Center hosts major concerts, regional festivals, conventions and rodeos year-round.
Walkable streets parallel a major highway, and busy roads
Downtown streets are pedestrian-friendly, and Capital Area Transit buses pass through the community on a fixed route. Business Loop 94 crosses directly through downtown, offering quick access to Mandan across the river. An Amtrak train line runs parallel to the highway. Washington, Seventh and Ninth Streets are also important, connecting to Kirkwood Mall and the rest of the city. Bismarck Municipal Airport is 3 miles away, and Sandford Medical Center and CHI St. Alexius Health Bismarck Medical Center are in the neighborhood.
Nearby parks offer everything, from trails and baseball games to zoos
Peace Park offers a relaxed place to eat outdoors in the middle of downtown. Custer Park is easily identified by its metal eagle sculpture and closeness to Elks Aquatic Center. Bismarck Municipal Ballpark is well-known for its baseball games, but the field also hosts movie nights and other community events. In winter, Legion Skating Rink opens outside the ballpark for ice-skating and pickup hockey. South of the stadium, Kiwanis Park offers an expansive playground, walking paths and BisMarket, a seasonal Saturday farmers market. Downtown Bismarck is also about 1 mile from Sertoma Park. “It's probably one of our most popular parks,” says Dana Schaar Jahner, community relations manager at Bismarck Parks and Recreation District. “Whether you’re a biker, runner or a visiting family, there are miles of trails, tons of sports leagues and lots of recreational facilities.” The park’s amenity list includes several picnic shelters, playgrounds and multi-use athletic courts. Sertoma Park is also home to the Super Slide Amusement Park and the Dakota Zoo.
Apartments, condos and homes surround the commercial center
Residential areas are mostly around the edges of the neighborhood. The community primarily has apartments, condominiums from the late 1900s and single-family homes from the early 1900s. Bungalows, American Foursquares and ranch-style homes have small grassy yards, short driveways and sidewalk access. Complexes have minimal green space but come right up to sidewalks, maintaining walkability. Infill development, which is usually apartments and condo complexes, has recently increased to meet the housing demand. Prices typically range between $100,000 and $230,000, but new construction can cost as much as $550,000.
Public schools and the University of Mary are within walking distance
Most students attend Will-Moore Elementary School, which has a B-minus Niche score. Next is Wachter Middle School, followed by Bismarck High School. The schools have B-minus and B-plus ratings. All three schools are within 1 mile of downtown, so many students walk or bike to class. The University of Mary’s downtown building offers flexible degree programs in business and marketing.
