Highland Acres
Suburban Neighborhood in Bismarck, North Dakota
Burleigh County 58501
Generational housing starts to open up to new residents
In 2022, Highland Acres joined the National Register of Historic Places for its well-preserved, mid-19th-century architecture. The community primarily has Colonial-inspired, split-level and ranch-style homes, which rarely go on the market. "It's one of those neighborhoods where it seems like people that moved in when it was built never moved out," Miller says. "The homes are just starting to turn over as some people from the neighborhood's first generation are either moving into assisted living or in with family." Homes for sale range in price between $220,000 and $450,000. Mature trees shade spacious yards, and basketball hoops overlook wide driveways leading to attached garages. Snow piles cover yards in the winter, and while the city will come to plow roads, streets can become slick with ice.Outdoor recreation surrounds Highland Acres and its school
When school isn't in session, Highland Acres Elementary's playground becomes a hub for activity. "Yesterday, when the weather was nice, both my kids were down there playing baseball with their friends," Miller says. "It feels like a throwback to when I was a kid — when you could just run around the neighborhood with your friends all day." Around the corner, Highland Acres Park offers a few forest trails and a creek to explore. Tom O'Leary Golf Course stays busy during the summer months. McQuades Softball Complex hosts little league games, and the Missouri Valley Family YMCA offers fitness programs year-round. On the other side of the neighborhood, the Riverfront Trail follows the Missouri River down to Sertoma Park. From elementary school to college, students can walk to class
Students can walk to Highland Acres Elementary School, near the neighborhood's center. It has an A-minus Niche rating and ranks as the fourth-best public elementary school in Burleigh County. Next is Horizon Middle School, which has a B-plus grade, followed by Century High School. This A-rated school ranks as the No. 1 public high school in North Dakota and offers courses through the Bismarck Career Academy and Technical Center. Bismarck State College is beside the neighborhood. The college is the state's designated polytechnic institution and has a B-minus grade.Residents help coordinate annual block parties and summer concerts
Highland Acres has two annual events. Miller says a group of residents has organized a small summer concert series for the last few years. On Sunday evenings, a venue space is set up next to the elementary school, and local bands play for crowds lounging on the soccer field. Each August, Bismarck United Church of Christ hosts the Highland Acres Block Party, which features a potluck dinner, lawn games and a bounce house for kids.Drivers use two main roads to get around the city
While sidewalks make the neighborhood walkable, residents rely on cars. The community has no public transportation, so people drive along West Main Avenue or West Divide Avenue to get around. West Main crosses the Missouri River and connects to downtown, while West Divide intersects with Interstate 94. The neighborhood is 2 miles from Sanford Emergency and Trauma Center, while the Bismarck Municipal Airport is 5 miles away.Shopping centers are within 2 miles, including downtown venues
Highland Acres is entirely residential, so residents drive 2 miles away for shopping and dining. Pinehurst Square has brands like Lowe's Home Improvement, Best Buy and Kohl's, and Family Fare Supermarket is across the interstate. Downtown has more locally owned options. Bread Poets Baking Company has made fresh loaves for almost 30 years, and Peacock Alley is the city's oldest restaurant. Located in the historic Patterson building, the eatery specializes in traditional American fare. After dining downtown, people can shop at Kirkwood Mall, attend concerts at Bismarck Event Center or see a play at Belle Mehus Auditorium.
