Park Hill’s homes are surrounded by popular parks and retail hubs
At first glance, Park Hill looks like any other small neighborhood in Bismarck. It has single-family homes, but the amenities that surround residential streets add flair to this little community. Given its name, Park Hill is unsurprisingly home to several green spaces, but its standout feature is that it borders Sertoma Park. Considered one of the city’s most popular places, residents have near-immediate access to outdoor facilities, city attractions and the Missouri River. The community is also near a major highway, a popular mall and downtown Bismarck. So, while Park Hill’s residential landscape may be less grand than other neighborhoods, locals are blocks away from bustling commercial centers and recreational hubs.
Sertoma Park has river trails and the state’s only roller coaster
“Park Hill is next door to definitely the best park in Bismarck,” says Austin Muth, a co-founding Realtor of Genesis Realty who has sold homes in the area. “It’s like Central Park vibes over there.” People strolling along Sertoma Park’s trails pass a sprawling riverfront, flat prairies, mature trees and busy playgrounds. Sports leagues play sand volleyball, tennis, pickleball and baseball, and the park is also home to Super Slide Amusement Park and the Dakota Zoo. The amusement park has everything from a mini golf course and carnival games to North Dakota’s only roller coaster. Dakota Zoo has more than 600 animals, educational demonstrations, train rides and summer camps. Inside the neighborhood, Bismarck Municipal Ball Park stays packed throughout baseball season. In winter, Legion Skating Rink opens in front of the ballpark for ice-skating and pickup hockey. Nearby, Kiwanis Park and Zonta Park have playgrounds, walking paths and picnic shelters.
Park Hill's homes and condos have less expensive price tags
“It’s more of a starter home community,” says Muth. “It’s a mixed bag over there with single-family homes, condos and twin homes.” Apartments, homes for rent and manufactured homes are also part of the community. Condos are usually part of a larger complex, while ranch-style homes, bungalows and split-level houses stand alone. Mature trees shade small yards in summer, and towering evergreens add a little color to the neighborhood during heavy snowfall. Roads are wide enough for street parking, but houses usually have a driveway. Home prices typically range between $90,000 and $300,000.
Locals are around the corner from downtown Bismarck and Kirkwood Mall
The community is directly west of two of the city’s largest commercial centers — Kirkwood Mall and downtown Bismarck. The mall has dozens of retailers and is surrounded by nationally recognized restaurants and stores. Downtown businesses are smaller and often locally owned. People can easily walk between pubs, bars, cafes and specialty retailers, like tattoo shops and art galleries. West Dakota Meats is the community’s butcher shop, and grocery stores like Natural Grocers and Family Fare Supermarket are less than 1 mile away. Kiwanis Park annually hosts BisMarket, an outdoor farmers market that runs from June to October.
Students attend schools roughly 2 miles away from the neighborhood
Students attend Moses Elementary School and Wachter Middle School. Both schools have B-minus scores from Niche and are less than 2 miles from the neighborhood. Although South Central High School is directly beside the neighborhood, the district assigns students to Bismarck High School. Bismarck High has a B-plus Niche score and a career academy through the Bismarck Technical Center.
Washington Street and the highway get busy during rush hour
Although sidewalks make residential streets walkable, most people drive around the city — even to nearby spots like Kirkwood Mall. Washington Street is the community’s primary road. It connects to Business Loop 94, which stretches across Bismarck and the Missouri River into Mandan. Traffic on both roads is often heavy during rush hours and weekends. The nearest hospital is Sanford Medical Center, 1 mile away, and Bismarck Municipal Airport is about 4 miles southeast.
Nearby events in downtown and Sertoma Park
Venues around the neighborhood regularly have events. Downtown Bismarck is a hub for citywide celebrations, street fairs and small business sales. People flood the streets in June for the annual Art & Wine Walk. Bismarck Event Center welcomes touring bands, conventions and regional festivals year-round. Sertoma Park hosts the annual Family Day River Walk in July, and the Dakota Zoo plans events throughout the year. These range from Easter egg hunts and story times with Santa to a Children’s Day celebration and 21-plus wine tastings.
