As the road heads further north and the suburban scenery of Rapid City peels away, Piedmont Valley reveals itself as a quiet, secluded community set between the Black Hills in the west and the hills surrounding Blackhawk Creek in the east. The neighborhood is caught somewhere between the rural and the suburban, growing steadily in Rapid City’s northern expansion. As new construction pops up across the landscape, Piedmont Valley is developing a reputation for privacy, safety and its proximity to downtown. “My family and I lived in Piedmont Valley for eight years and loved it,” says Katy Kinnan, director of outreach for Fountain Springs Church. “It’s growing fast — really up and coming.”

Modern homes with acreage
Farms and ranches in the western side of the region are found along gravel roads, sitting on grand stretches of acreage and often fenced in for pasture or privacy. Further east, streets of modern suburban homes begin to fork off the main drags of Peaceful Pines Road and Deadwood Avenue, creating clusters of mid-century and Contemporary Craftsman designs on one and two acres, almost entirely built in the last 20 years. Prices fall between the low $600,000s and the low $800,000s, depending on the house size and the lot.

Hiking through Founders Park
Though surrounded by greenery, the community has no official public parks. However, an 8-mile drive south takes locals to Founders Park. Originally the first campsite of Rapid City’s founders, the park is known for its tall hills striped with over 20 miles of hiking and biking trails. A visit to the top of its peaks offers a panoramic view of the surrounding city. Nearby forests are popular spots for camping, hunting and fishing, while the Black Hills are winter skiing and snowboarding destinations.

Texas-style BBQ at J.R.'s
J.R.’s Rhodehouse BBQ Pit offers no-frills barbecue in a casual environment. The Pit's menu of Texas-style favorites includes the Josey Wales, a sandwich stacked high with brisket, turkey, pulled pork and a hot link. Otherwise, local eateries and retail establishments in the area can be harder to find, requiring trips further south. “A lot of the chain restaurants migrate closer to the north end of town,” says Michael Frybarger, owner of Ascend Realty. “Most of their shopping will come from the Uptown Rapid Mall.” Located 7 miles south in Northeast Rapid City, the Uptown Rapid features nearly 100 restaurants and shopping options, with Walmart Supercenter and Sam’s Club nearby.

Important to know
Wildfires are a seasonal risk in South Dakota, particularly in wide, grassy areas like Piedmont Valley. Locals are encouraged to stay aware of danger level trends daily. The seclusion in this area brings significant safety benefits, keeping the local CAP Index Score at a 1/10, compared to the national average of 4/10. However, the surrounding area’s events and historical draws make it popular with tourists. As a result, the main thoroughfare of Interstate 90 can bring about a lot of noise, particularly during events like the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
