Ivylog offers a quiet environment with lakefront access in Blairsville
Ivylog is a rural community on the outskirts of Blairsville that offers a slow pace of life in the Appalachian Mountains. “You’re not too far away from town, but you’re far enough out that you’re away from the crowds,” says Gracie Nix, marketing coordinator with Blairsville-Union County Chamber of Commerce. The commute is less than 10 miles, making it a short drive to grab a bite or get groceries. Another draw to the area is Lake Nottely. “You’re close to the lake, and who doesn’t love that?” Nix says. There are also several churches in the area. Ivylog receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
Lake Nottely is a recreational hub in Ivylog
Lake Nottely spans about 4,100 acres, and people go swimming, boating, fishing and jet skiing. Campgrounds and public beaches dot the shoreline, with a rope swing that lets out onto the lake. Poteete Creek Campground has a playground, and Woodruff Scout Reservation hosts Boy Scout summer camps. The Nottely Reservoir Trail is one of several multi-use trails around the lake, running over 2 miles. Old Union Golf Course is a public, 18-hole course. “It’s gorgeous,” Nix says.
Variety of homes include lakefront properties and modest ranch styles
As part of the Appalachian Mountains, Ivylog’s hilly terrain is filled with towering pine trees. Homes are spaced out on large lots that average an acre and offer a sense of seclusion. “You’ve definitely got some land,” Nix says. The wide range of houses includes modest cottages and ranch styles dating back to the mid-20th century, as well as sprawling lakefront homes and cabins built after 2000. Many properties have large windows and balconies where residents can take in the view. Single-family homes range from $150,000 to $850,000, depending on size, location and condition. Those closer to the lake are more expensive; some larger ones can cost $1 million to $2 million. Some manufactured homes and RV properties are in the area, costing $80,000 to $350,000, depending on size and location. Land is also available.
Union County School District includes career and technical education
Ivylog is part of the Union County School District. Union County Primary School receives a B from Niche and teaches kindergarten through second grade. Union County Elementary, Middle and High Schools earn a B-plus. At the high school, students can enroll in the College and Career Academy for courses like computer science and automotive technologies.
Ivylog is a car-dependent community with easy access to Blairsville
U.S. Route 19 runs through Ivylog, connecting it to Blairsville. The closest emergency room is at Union General Hospital, about 10 miles away. Most residents will travel about 120 miles to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport; Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport is a closer option, about 80 miles away.
Blairsville supplements the few stores and restaurants in Ivylog
While residents travel to Blairsville for most shopping and dining, there are some options in Ivylog itself. Dam! Good BBQ is open three days a week, serves smoked meat and is just down the road from Dollar General. Other local favorites include The Sawmill Place, which is open for breakfast and lunch. There is a line most weekends, but Nix says she always encourages people to wait it out. “Sure enough, they leave saying, ‘Oh my gosh! We’re coming back,'" she says. Most people get groceries from Ingles Market or Food Land, a mom and pop store. Walmart and Home Depot are in the city.
