Suches is a mountain community built on adventure and privacy
Suches residents live the high life, literally. The area known as “The Valley of the Clouds” is tucked into the Blue Ridge Mountains north of Atlanta, around 2,500 feet above sea level. The region is full of outdoor adventures that provide views of the mountains and the valley. A wide variety of homes means people can find a place that suits their lifestyle. “Most people come for privacy,” says Sue Jones, an associate broker with Keller Williams Community Partners who was born and raised in Suches. “They like being away from the city. And it’s a small community. You know who lives in all the houses.”
Hiking, fishing and camping in national forests
The community is part of the Chattahoochee-Ocoee National Forest. Visiting the Woody Gap Recreation Area and hiking to Preacher’s Rock along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail will reward adventurers with a view of rolling mountains. It is a popular sunrise spot. The DeSoto Falls Recreation Area, in the Blood Mountain Wilderness, has campgrounds, waterfalls, bike trails and horse-riding opportunities. It is also open for hunting and fishing. Visitors should note that black bear encounters are common in the Blood Mountain region.
Nearby, Vogel State Park is popular in the fall, when the leaves change color; it provides a view of the region’s red and orange hills. The park also has campsites, trails and the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum. The Toccoa River is close and provides kayaking and fishing, though people can first traverse its Swinging Bridge, which sways as visitors cross it. At 270 feet, it is the longest suspension bridge east of the Mississippi River.
Suches hosts the Indian Summer Festival each October. The celebration combines food vendors, games and live music while raising funds for Woody Gap School.
Cabin-style homes that sit far from one another on curved roads
The area's cabin-style houses are often far from other residences. Many require long driveways as they sit above or below main roads like Georgia State Route 60. One- and two-bedroom cabins can range from $180,000 to $400,000. Homes of three bedrooms or more generally run from $300,000 to $750,000. The car-dependent community’s main asphalt streets are well-paved. Most of them snake through thick woods, but some residential roads can take drivers through valleys of grass fields. The community does not have many streetlights. Lots and large parcels of land are also available, usually from $30,000 to $60,000 per acre. Suches has a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, well below the national average of 4.
Sandwiches and BBQ eateries, plus the Cooper's Creek Store
Two Wheels of Suches is a biker lodge that doubles as a restaurant. Kennedy Creek Tavern serves sandwiches and Southern-inspired entrees. Wildcat BBQ & General Store, which closes in the winter, is known for its ribs. Cooper’s Creek Store has groceries, supplies and local art for sale. A Walmart Supercenter is in Dahlonega, around 15 miles from the center of town. Several wineries are close to the community, including Wolf Mountain Vineyards.
Woody Gap School gives students individual attention
Students are served by Union County Schools. Because travel to other parts of the county can be difficult in inclement weather, Jones says, all kindergarten through 12th-grade students attend Woody Gap School. It typically enrolls fewer than 100 students and emphasizes individual attention in the classroom. It has a C Niche rating.
Winter snow can make nearby highways difficult to travel
Georgia State Route 60 cuts through the area, and U.S. Route 19 is a few miles east. Blairsville is just over 20 miles north, and Dahlonega is about 15 miles south. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is about a 90-mile drive. Jones said winters can bring heavy snowstorms because of Suches’ elevation. The snow can make travel difficult. “Our mailman once had to deliver mail on his tractor because he couldn’t get his car out,” Jones says.
