A quiet yet convenient rural community within minutes of Savannah
Spread across 14 miles of bucolic former farmland like some American Arcadia, the quaint city of Bloomingdale offers slow-paced yet convenient living 15 miles west of Savannah. According to local lore, the town was named by railroad engineers in the 1830s for the wildflowers that grew along the freshly laid tracks, and residents still honor that history with a local museum. U.S. Highway 80 forms the heart of Bloomingdale. The corridor provides access to a variety of single-family homes, commercial businesses and nine of the city’s 13 worship centers. “It’s close-knit and family oriented with proximity to all your needs, and it’s pretty quiet,” says Joan Johnson, a Realtor with Keller Williams Coastal Area Partners.

Highway 80 provides a convenient commercial corridor
Highway 80, which bisects the city, offers a level of convenience not often associated with a rural-tinged destination such as Bloomingdale. Butcher’s Block is a Bloomingdale institution that has been serving up hot meals and offering fresh cut meats for more than four decades. The Donut Shop, which is open at 4:00 a.m. daily, has been fueling residents with early morning coffee and breakfast treats – including its signature red velvet donut -- for more than 15 years. Nearby Roma Pizza of Bloomingdale is a highly rated eatery where residents can experience a tasty slice of New York. For daily needs and other essentials, Piggly Wiggly anchors a shopping center on the eastern edge of the city. Modern amenities mingle with the centerpiece of local history along the Highway 80 corridor. The Bloomingdale History Museum, fronted with an historic railroad crossing sign and green handcar, contains links to the city’s past. Inside, the mural painted by local artist Mary Mitchell showcases an obsidian steam engine snaking between shotgun-style houses and historic bungalows. Pine and cypress trees backdrop the piece, while wildflowers occupy the foreground. The Bloomingdale History Society meets monthly at the museum. Veterans Freedom Park and the WC Strozier Community Center are other points of interest on or just off Highway 80.

New home construction is tied to nearby employment opportunities
The housing that is concentrated around Highway 80 consists mostly of ranch-style homes on spacious lots. Charming cottage-style homes and colorful bungalows with large, welcoming porches also can be found among the more established options. Most of Bloomingdale’s land remains rural, but it is slowly transforming through new home construction on the south and west sides. “Builders like DR Horton, Lennar and Smith Family Homes are gearing up for the migration of people into the area who will work at the new Hyundai plant,” Johnson says. The automaker’s first electric vehicle facility is slated to open in 2025 in nearby Ellabell. The newer homes come with standard features such as private driveways and attached garages. Overall, prices typically range from the low $200,000s to the high $400,000s. For comparison, the average home value of just over $313,000 is roughly $50,000 less than the average in neighboring Pooler and Savannah. “You can avoid high taxes, but you’re still close enough that you can be in the city within minutes,” says Johnson, who has sold homes throughout the area, including in Bloomingdale and Pooler.

Taylor Park is the center of recreational activity
The availability of open land away from Highway 80 provides more than just a place for new home construction. Central Bloomingdale is home to Taylor Park, a sprawling recreational complex that is the center of organized youth activity in baseball, softball, football and soccer. Under the guidance of the Bloomingdale Recreation Department, city youth have access to spring and fall sports leagues. In addition, anglers can take advantage of the many fishing holes that dot the landscape, and equestrians can work with their horses at Sugar Wolfe Farm.

Bloomingdale Elementary is located in the heart of the city
Students have access to schools in two different counties. Bloomingdale Elementary, a Chatham County school rated C-plus by Niche, is conveniently located in the heart of town. New Hempstead High is a B-minus-rated school in the southeast corner of the city. It was named a 2023 Georgia AP Honor School. Just north of the city in Effingham County are South Effingham Middle School, rated A-minus, and South Effingham High School, rated B-plus. Schools in the Savannah-Chatham County district are B-rated, while Effingham County schools are B-plus-rated.

There is no public transportation in Bloomingdale, but Highway 80 and Interstate 16, which runs through the city on the south side, provide access to Savannah.

Christmas Parade is a featured annual event
As a small traditional city, Bloomingdale fosters a sense of community with local events. The annual Christmas Parade features Santa riding through the center of town atop a bright-red Bloomingdale fire engine. The parade culminates in the lighting of the Christmas tree at the history museum. Accompanying the parade is an annual toy drive.
