Oakwoods
A variety of homes in traditional styles
The median year homes were built in Oakwoods is 1991, and the neighborhood’s homes come in various designs, such as traditional two-stories, split levels and ranch-style homes. The beauty of the neighborhood’s age, Bowers says, is that most of Oakwoods homes have already had major updates. “Most of the homes are 20 to 30 years old. That means large projects like roof replacement have already been done.” Outdated homes typically sell between $150,000 and $215,000, while partially remodeled or fully updated homes sell between $220,000 and $300,000. The median home price is $235,000, up 6% from the previous year.Championship girls high school soccer
Young Oakwoods learners can begin their educational journey at Pepper Ridge Elementary School, which offers kindergarten through fifth grade classes and earns a B-plus on Niche. George Evans Junior High School provides pre-kindergarten through eighth grade classes and earns a B. “The neighborhood is part of Normal unified schools,” Bowers says. “So kids go to Normal West, and a lot of families like that.” Former Illinois State Representative Adam Kinzinger graduated from Normal Community West High School, which serves Oakwoods. The school’s girls soccer team has qualified for two Illinois High School Association State Tournaments and won four Big Twelve Conference titles, and the school earns a B-plus.A neighborhood park, disc golf and a local zoo
Just off Juniper Lane, residents can follow a paved trail to Oakwoods Park, where kids can enjoy playground slides and ballers can organize pickup games on the basketball court. Slightly more than a half-mile northeast of Oakwoods, P.J. Irvin Park offers a disc golf course, a playground and a pavilion. On South Morris Avenue, less than 2 miles from Oakwoods, Miller Park holds the Miller Park Zoo and Miller Park Lake, where residents can rent paddleboats. In addition to community parks, Oakwoods is roughly 2 miles from Prairie Vista Golf Course on West Hamilton Road and Highland Park Golf Course on South Main Street.Local shopping and dining within a short drive
Six Points Road connects Oakwoods to Veterans Parkway and the many dining and shopping opportunities surrounding the thoroughfare. Near the intersection of Veterans Parkway and South Main Street, about 1.5 miles from Oakwoods, Tony’s Diner is locally loved for its breakfast meals. Further east along Veterans, Lil Beaver Brewery serves pints of its own specially crafted brews and offers a full menu of pub fare. Residents can pick up fresh produce at Jackson’s Produce on Springfield Road or head north to Walmart on West Market Street for more extensive grocery needs. They can also head less than 3 miles north to reach Downtown Bloomington, which holds a collection of local shops like Red Raccoon Games, a popular shop selling tabletop games.Interstates 55 and 74
Oakwoods streets don’t have sidewalks, but the neighborhood has a few paved walkways between homes. The Connect Transit bus system services stops at the intersection of 6 Points Road and Woodhavens Drive. Interstates 55 and 74 merge just 1.5 miles from Oakwoods, putting downtown St. Louis 164 miles away and downtown Chicago 145 miles away.Events organized by an active homeowners association
The Oakwoods Homeowners Association maintains an active presence in the community and organizes events like Food Truck nights and visits from a library on wheels—The Bookmobile. On Food Truck nights, neighbors also gather to socialize at Oakwoods Park. With Downtown Bloomington just a few miles away, residents don’t have to travel far to enjoy city events like the Doggie Easter Egg Hunt in spring or the Bloomington-Normal Jaycees Holiday Parade in December. Some train noise
At its closest point, the west side of Oakwoods is less than 200 feet from a railroad line, so some homes on the west side may hear noise from passing trains. “It’s an Amtrak line, so it comes and goes pretty quickly,” Bowers says. “A few years ago, the residents did put together a petition to have the trains stop blowing their horns while they’re passing by the neighborhood. That helped a lot.”
