‘Bedroom community’ in east Bloomington
Gentry Estates provides room from the more cramped parts of this Indiana college town. Located several miles from both downtown Bloomington and Indiana University, this neighborhood is a suburban subdivision complete with its own park, basketball court and community pool. Light traffic makes it easier for neighbors to go on strolls and children to ride their bikes outside. “It’s very much a suburban neighborhood,” says Angela Van Rooy, Bloomington’s neighborhood services program manager. “It’s sort of a bedroom community, really.” Adding to the conveniences here is the neighborhood’s proximity to the east side shopping district, which is home to the city’s largest Kroger. Gentry Estates’ location on the eastern end of the city also puts it within minutes of the outdoor haven anchored by the largest lake located completely in the state. “It’s a great east side location that’s convenient to east side amenities, IU Health, IU and Lake Monroe,” says Steve Smith, a broker with F.C. Tucker/Bloomington Realtors.
Suburban subdivision with modern Traditionals and Colonial Revivals
Like in much of Bloomington, groups of both young and mature trees line the streets of Gentry Estates. The canopy provides shade to both the houses and narrow paths winding through the neighborhood. Many lots here are no larger than a half-acre, and several make room for lush garden beds enclosed by bricks and stones. Limestone exteriors are far less prevalent here than in other parts of the city. Instead, houses in Gentry Estates mainly show clapboard and brick siding, features that are typical of suburban subdivisions built between the 1980s and early 2010s. The architecture consists of many contemporary Traditionals and Colonials but also includes a few modern ranch-style houses and split-levels. Depending on size, single-family homes sell for roughly between $320,000 and $420,000.
Diverse dining and shopping options around College Mall
The neighborhood is a few blocks from the College Mall area, where the establishments there range from local eateries to a bookstore and community-owned grocer selling locally sourced foods. Needmore Coffee Roasters is a morning stop for pastries and beverages. Regulars at BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse enjoy its craft drinks and other menu options like the establishment’s own spin on Chicago’s famous deep-dish pizza. The Office Lounge and Liquor Store is a late-night hangout and its pork sirloin sandwich is among the regulars’ favorite choices. Morgenstern’s Bookstore & Cafe carries anything from children’s books to works by New York Times bestselling authors. The bookstore is a popular studying spot for local students and hosts free monthly book clubs that focus on a variety of genres. Kroger, the Bloomingfoods Co-op Market East and B-Town International Market are some of the nearest grocery shopping options.
From community parks to Monroe Lake outdoor haven
In addition to its own community amenities, Gentry Estates is close to Latimer Woods in neighboring Hoosier Acres. Those who enjoy nature walks can explore the 10–acre old-growth forest and pass by a few boards providing information about the local plant species. In another neighboring community, Park Ridge East Park provides another basketball court and a playground complete with brides, a short climbing wall and slides. Indiana State Road 446 connects Gentry Estates to the Monroe Lake state park. Measuring nearly 24,000 acres — with the lake itself being 10,750 acres — activities at this vast par range from swimming, fishing and hiking to boating and camping. The fish anglers will find include bluegill, largemouth bass and channel catfish. A network of trails provides miles of nature walks, trail runs and hikes through the forest surrounding the lake.
Zoned for highly rated Bloomington public schools
Gentry Estates is zoned for Binford and Rogers elementary schools. The two schools share a campus and receive A and A-minus grades, respectively, from Niche. Rogers only serves kindergarteners to second graders as part of a unique model that aims to better focus on the needs of its younger students. A diverse school, Rogers’ students hail from over a dozen countries. Tri-North Middle School and Bloomington High School North both receive A grades from Niche. With the rating site ranking it among the 25 best high schools in the state for STEM, BHSN’s extracurriculars include drone and Esports clubs. BHSN’s students can also enroll in advanced courses at Indiana University and participate in internships with local businesses.
After-hours events at Morgenstern’s Bookstore & Cafe
The Morgenstern’s Bookstore & Cafe occasionally hosts community events throughout the year. The Friday Nights at Morgenstern Books features live music performances, while those who want to watch some local talent may attend the “After-Hours Comedy Hour” in August. Comedy show spectators can also enjoy beverages, including wines from the region’s Oliver Winery. Also, the State Road 45 bypass puts the neighborhood just a few miles away from the Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall and the Indiana University Memorial Stadium, the respective homes of Hoosier basketball and football.
A short distance from State Road 45 bypass
Although many here drive to commute across the city, the Bloomington Transit does have a bus stop along Indiana State Road 446. The neighborhood is close to the Indiana State Road 45 bypass, which leads to the IU Health Bloomington Hospital and Interstate 69. The interstate goes to Indianapolis about 55 miles north. Those going on out-of-state flights also go to the Indianapolis International Airport.
