Bloomington neighborhood next to legend’s backyard
Park Ridge East began as an extension of the similarly named Park Ridge. While these neighboring communities on Bloomington’s eastern fringes share traits, Park Ridge East is younger by a few years and covers a slightly larger area. Otherwise, Park Ridge East offers a primarily residential community within a short drive of the many shops, retail chains and eateries found at the College Mall corridor. The community's outdoor amenities include a neighborhood park complete with a butterfly garden, and the area also borders scenic woodlands belonging to one of the region’s most famous residents, heartland rock legend John Mellencamp. “A lot of people, especially families, choose to move to that area because there’s a really nice neighborhood park that’s walkable and that has some tennis courts, a playground and just open spaces,” says Heather Groves, the owner of Sterling Real Estate. “They [Park Ridge and Park Ridge East] got very similar vibes for people that live there.”

Ranch-style houses and split-levels amid lush landscaping
One similarity Park Ridge East shares with its neighbor is its commitment to landscaping, and the inclusion of native plants like perennials, in their community's shared spaces. The neighborhood's entrance even features island garden beds showcasing these plants. “In the neighborhood association itself, they got a committee that specializes in native plants, and a lot of the neighbors have really gone out of their way to make their own yards native [too],” says Angela Van Rooy, the city’s neighborhood services program manager.
Homes here include ranch-style houses, split-levels, bi-levels, Colonial Revivals and townhouses. The neighborhood features winding, tree-lined roads with multiple cul-de-sacs jutting out from the larger streets. Single-family homes sell from about $200,000 to $400,000, while townhouse-style units cost just over $200,000.
