Bloomington neighborhood that takes pride in its scenery
This east Bloomington neighborhood humorously calls itself “the original Park Ridge” to distinguish it from the larger and slightly younger Park Ridge East. In addition to being down the street from the College Mall corridor, the decades-old Park Ridge has access to perks like its own park and biking and walking trails, the latter of which runs along the railroad tracks on the neighborhood’s northern border. Homeowners in this ecologically minded community also enjoy activities like tending to dense, colorful gardens that occasionally draw wandering deer. “Park Ridge revamped their neighborhood association a few years ago, and they are quite active. They have a small park in the neighborhood that they’ve really taken ownership of and have done removals of invasive plants and other things to take care of it. They’re very proud of having done that,” says Angela Van Rooy, Bloomington’s neighborhood services program manager.

Mid-20th century homes and a growing tree canopy
Park Ridge includes ranch-style houses, split-levels, bi-levels and Colonial Revivals, many of which share the landscape with patches of sweetgum, maple and pine trees. Several homes also showcase the exterior limestone accents common across Bloomington. While residents can go on walks here, they do need to watch for some cut-through traffic due to the neighborhood’s location along the East Third Street thoroughfare. However, the neighborhood has placed speed bumps on its most used roads to control speeding. The neighborhood is also expanding its beautification efforts by planting native tree seeds and perennials. “The native plants are something that they’ve really focused on,” Van Rooy says, adding the future trees will cover nearly 45 species. Single-family homes mainly go from just under $300,000 to about $400,000. The neighborhood also has a few apartment complexes.

Down the road from College Mall shopping and dining
Park Ridge is down the street from the College Mall, a dense shopping area with chain brands and popular local staples. “People also really love its [the neighborhood’s] proximity to east side amenities like Target, the mall and the grocery stores,” says Heather Groves, the owner of Sterling Real Estate. Morning commuters can start their days at Needmore Coffee Roasters or Piccoli Dolci, the latter making French pastries such as powdered sugar- and almond-coated croissants. Groves recommends DeAngelo’s Italian Creole Restaurant and Bucceto’s Pizza Pasta for lunch and dinner. Local grocery options include the community-owned Bloomingfoods Co-Op Market and the B-Town International Market, which specializes in Asian products. Chains include Kroger — one of the largest in Indiana — and Aldi.
