Peaceful South Indiana community with close-knit feel
Located less than 10 miles from Bloomington, Stanford is a quiet community amid South Indiana’s rolling rural landscape. Recognizable places here include the long-existing post office and the Stanford Baptist Church, an institution seated atop a hill and covered in the limestone so common across the region. Stanford boasts family owned businesses, such as a 156-acre beef farm, and proximity to attractions like a seasonal pumpkin patch and sprawling corn maze. This community also takes pride in its close-knit feel, as shown by the church’s new pastor going door-to-door to introduce his family. “I think we all kind of look out for each other and check in," says Stacy Hayes, who owns Hayes Grass-Fed Beef with her husband, a Stanford native. "If we see an ambulance up the road, we make sure that everything’s OK and ask, ‘Do you need anything?’ And that kind of stuff."

Ranch-style and Craftsman houses amid farmland
Despite its farmland surroundings, many in Stanford still consider it a “burg” of Bloomington. “Whenever I’m asked to designate where I live — as if it’s rural or suburban — I don’t think it’s either,” Hayes says. “Because we’re 5 miles from Walmart, but there’s no sidewalks, no bus stops, no public transportation or anything like that.”
Located along winding country roads, home styles include Craftsman, ranch and simple gablefront cottages separated by acres of open spaces and mature trees. New homes have occasionally been built over time, although houses stay on the market for an average of 157 days. Home prices can depend on size, acreage and condition. They range from $100,000 to just over $350,000, with much larger estates nearing $1 million.
