Relaxing waters and quiet streets on Pine Island
Situated along the northern half of Pine Island, Bokeelia offers an easygoing lifestyle less than 10 miles off the coast of Cape Coral. Characterized by mature palm trees and quiet streets, the neighborhood maintains an atmosphere appealing to vacationers and full-time residents. “There are a lot of us that live here year-round. It’s great for people who want to come and relax and go for sunset cruises in Charlotte Harbor, and it’s great for fishermen because we have such great fishing here,” says Lori Caldwell of Hamilton-Franklin Realty, a Realtor living and working in Bokeelia.
Big Jim’s Creek Preserve, fishing spots and community hubs
Outdoor recreational opportunities remain one of the neighborhood’s main draws. One of the largest green spaces on the island is Big Jim Creek Preserve, a popular place for kayaking and canoeing through the mangroves along the western shores of Pine Island. Farther south, right off Pine Island Road, Phillips Park invites residents to climb the playground or make a splash in the community pool. For fishing, the Bokeelia Fishing Pier sits along the northern tip of Pine Island, allowing residents to cast a line in Charlotte Harbor. Because many homes feature boat docks or access to the canal, locals can also enjoy seasonal fishing and harvesting opportunities in the harbor and gulf. “We get a lot of shrimp here in the wintertime, and stone crabbing starts in October,” Caldwell says.
Pineland residents include the many local birds and wildlife native to the area.

Condos and single-family homes close to Charlotte Harbor
Bungalows and stilt homes line the Gasparilla Sound and the many canals that connect the neighborhood to the Gulf of Mexico. Dirt roads make up many of the residential streets, each lined with dense greenery that is signature to island life in Southwest Florida. “We’ve only got one main road and one stop sign in the middle of it,” Caldwell explains. “It’s a great place to be if you like to be off the beaten path but love the water.” While condos are available starting around $160,000, most residents of Bokeelia live in single-family homes that start around $275,000 for two bedrooms and reach up to $500,000 for three bedrooms. A few homes sustained damage from Hurricane Ian, so there are also houses awaiting rehabilitation for less than $200,000.

Farmers markets and the Lighted Boat Parade
Events in Bokeelia and along Pine Island allow residents to embrace a sense of community away from downtown Fort Myers. The Pine Island Tropical Fruit Market provides a farmers market space five days a week, and Island Conclave offers art classes, like wire wrapping, each Saturday. In the winter, the Lighted Boat Parade brings nearly 20 boats to the bay, illuminating the water with lights and inflatable displays.
The Randell Research Center at Pineland also offers classes and trails through nature.

From regional retailers to Jimmy Buffet favorites
Residents of Bokeelia seldom feel the need to leave the island, especially with the increase in available retailers near the intersection of Pine Island Road and Stringfellow Road. “We ended up getting a Publix a couple of years ago finally, which has been really nice. We have Winn-Dixie, a CVS, Pine Alley Pizza, a couple car shops, five banks, a liquor store and Chinese food,” Caldwell explains. The neighborhood also includes several local and well-known restaurants for more formal dining options. At the island’s center are spots like Tacos El Viejon and Street Eatz & Ale, but additional eateries are along the water’s edge. “Tarpon Lodge is a five-star restaurant, and the same people own Cabbage Key—where Jimmy Buffet wrote Cheeseburgers in Paradise,” Caldwell says.
Pineland residents can find groceries at the centrally located Publix.

Elementary school in Bokeelia and options across the water
Though the neighborhood feels separated from Fort Myers, Bokeelia is still zoned for Lee County Public Schools. Students begin their education right on the island at Pine Island Elementary, a B-graded school that ranks among the top 20 elementary schools in the county. From here, students transition to Mariner Middle, a B-graded school, and graduate from Mariner High, a B-plus-graded school that ranks among the top 10 in the county. At Mariner High, students can participate in engineering, leadership and tourism academies or take advantage of dual enrollment opportunities.
Pine Island Elementary is centrally located near residential communities on Pine Island.

The only bridge to Fort Myers
When traveling off the island, residents must cross Pine Island Road to reach downtown Fort Myers or the towns outside Lee County. Downtown Fort Myers is less than 20 miles from Pine Island Center, and ramps to Interstate 75 are less than 25 miles away. When flying out of Florida, locals venture about 35 miles southeast to the Southwest Florida International Airport.
