Barefoot Beach
Barefoot Beach Preserve is a well-kept secret
Barefoot Beach holds a secret. While the community may be private, it is also home to a public preserve of the same name. Barefoot Beach Preserve sits at the neighborhood's southern end and offers 342 acres of natural land, sandy beaches and direct ocean access. The protected enclave is one of the last undeveloped barrier islands on the Southwest coast. "It's one of the very few beaches where you can enjoy pure nature without seeing high-rise condos or large mansions," Dittrich says. Lovers Key State Park is 5.5 miles to the north and provides another way to enjoy the deep blue waters of the gulf.Kayaking is a popular activity here, and wildlife sightings of manatees, dolphins and bald eagles are common. Residents who don't have private docks in their backyard can store their watercraft at the community-maintained Barefoot marina. Southwest Florida is renowned for its fishing, and game fish in the area include tarpon, redfish and goliath grouper. For recreation on dry land, the neighborhood has tennis and pickleball courts and a clubhouse with a gym.
Expansive waterfront homes with ocean views or private docks
The neighborhood has undergone a residential transformation, resulting in some of the more scenic homes in Southwest Florida. "There's a broad range as all the homes here are custom homes," Dittrich says. "The neighborhood has been developing since the late 80s and transformed from small beach cottages to newer four-level homes that span multiple lots." The architectural style varies and draws upon the influences of the area. Coastal Contemporary and ultra-modern estates are common, as are Spanish Revival villas with stucco exteriors and red-tiled roofs. All properties sit on large lots and feature well-manicured front lawns and expansive backyard swimming pools.Bayside homes have private docks that offer access to the inlets of the gulf, while oceanside boasts backyard decks perfect for enjoying sunsets. Most new builds size up to three or four stories and come with private elevators. Prices range anywhere from $2 million to $10 million, depending on the number of bedrooms and location. Mid-rise condos with ocean views are also available and price between $1.5 million and $4 million. Living so close to the ocean comes with its own sets of challenges, but updated construction techniques have provided protection in recent years. “Homes have gotten bigger and higher since we are within 200 feet of the actual surf line,” Dittrich says. “There are very stringent building code requirements, and all living areas are elevated 21 feet above sea level.”
Numerous waterfront restaurants nearby
Bonita Beach Road is the site of a handful of popular restaurants that offer fresh seafood and scenic views. Doc's Beach House is an open-air restaurant and bar known for its large gulf shrimp and breezy vibe. "It's got a real laid-back atmosphere since it's right on the beach with a walkup bar," says Randy Keys, a local Realtor with RE/MAX Hallmark. "People go there for the sunsets." Coconut Jack's Waterfront Grille is just down the street and sits on the bay, meaning boaters can come and dock their boats. The restaurant features a menu full of tasty seafood and tropical drinks, helping it earn the distinction of best waterfront dining according to the Bonita Springs Community's Choice Awards. Sweet Melissa's Ice Cream Shoppe has dessert covered with key lime pie and various classic flavors. Publix Super Market is 2.5 miles away. For name-brand retailers and luxury goods, the Mercato shopping center is 8 miles away.Barefoot Beach Club is exclusive
The Club at Barefoot Beach is private, but available to residents and non-residents. Located along the shores of the Gulf, it offers resort-style amenities, including tennis courts and beachside service complete with umbrellas and cabanas. Activities range from poolside cookouts to spring carnivals, and there are two on-site restaurants to choose from. Membership dues and waitlist times can be significant.Travel throughout Southwest Florida
The neighborhood enjoys seclusion with a 24-hour gate. Well-connected transportation routes allow residents to travel throughout Southwest Florida by land or sea. Barefoot Beach Road runs parallel and connects to Downtown Naples, 16 miles away. For private and general aviation flights, Naples Airport is 18 miles away. Southwest Florida International Airport is 22 miles north and offers domestic and international routes. NCH North Naples is the closest major medical facility, 8 miles away. Wiggins Pass is the main inlet used by boaters to access the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico.Hurricane Risks
The neighborhood is located on the beachfront, which brings its own set of risks. Southwest Florida is prone to hurricanes and received a direct hit in 2022 from Hurricane Ian, the costliest storm in Florida's history. All of the community lies in a FEMA-designated special flood hazard zone. Collier County participates in the National Flood Insurance Program, and homeowners are encouraged to review available policies.Highly rated Collier County public schools
Although many residents are seasonal, those sticking around are zoned into the highly rated Collier County Public School District, ranked fifth best in Florida according to Niche. Naples Park Elementary receives an A-minus rating. North Naples Middle School receives an A rating and offers numerous elective courses ranging from 3D art to understanding music. Aubrey Rogers High School welcomed its first students in August 2023 and is the newest school in the district. The high school has a state-of-the-art engineering lab and a 1,300-seat performing arts center. For private education, Grace Classical Academy is a highly rated option, 2 miles away.
