Bonneau is a quaint waterfront town on the eastern shore of Lake Moultrie. This community was founded in the early 20th century. It was the original seat of Berkeley County and was the site of the county’s first high school. According to Realtor and Berkeley County local Tori Beach Williams, Bonneau is where people come to “do what they want to do.” A beautiful range of homes lines rural and lakeside streets in a community with “no HOA. Tourists don’t really come here. You’d have to know Bonneau is there to really visit. It’s a real hidden gem,” says Williams.

Locals on the waterfront can relax on the waterfront or fish from their private docks. Plenty of public launches are located around the neighborhood for those with fishing boats. Young and adult readers trade books in the Free Little Libraries on various street corners. One street from the lakeshore, the Bonneau Civic Center hosts seasonal events and workshops and provides college scholarships to area students. Along Route 52 and Bonneau’s Main Street, the recreation department hosts large ball fields and public spaces for recreational games and seasonal events.

Locals live along wide country roads fringed by dense forest, with lakefront properties featuring private docks and lake access and inland houses having a more secluded and rural character. “Locals want a place where they can do what they want; there’s a lot of retirees,” Realtor Tori Beach Williams said. Tori Beach Williams talks about the residential landscape, saying, “Everything from manufactured homes to beautiful million-dollar waterfront homes, it really has everything.” Cape cods with covered front porches, more modest ranch-style and manufactured houses and new construction line Bonneau’s lakeside avenues and country roads. Home prices vary depending on several factors; for instance, lakeside homes cost anywhere from $280,000 for a small home on a modest lot to as much as $1.1 million dollars for waterfront mansions. More rural homes range from $239,000 for a modest ranch-style house close to a forest preserve to $675,000 for a two-acre contemporary home.

Since the 1990s, the community has come together for “The Peanut Broil”. Tractor and car shows, live music performances, a parade and a pig cookoff celebrate the town’s history and community.

Bonneau is a tiny town, with a few local restaurants and basic convenience stores constituting its commercial businesses. Locals frequent the Watermark Bar & Grille, offering a range of seafood dishes and American fare with indoor and waterfront dining options. Another local spot is CTs at the Lake, further up Black Oak Road, serving elevated American fare and a range of cocktails and beverages. Grocery shopping is usually done in Monck’s Corner, 10 miles to the south, which has big box stores like Target and Food Lion.

Artistic sensibilities and high-achieving athletics at Bonneau schools
Public school students are served by the Berkeley County School District, beginning their academic journeys at primary schools like H.E. Bonner Elementary. The school has an overall B-minus rating on Niche. It places emphasis on the role of the arts in its everyday curriculum. Students move on to intermediate and secondary schools such as Macedonia Middle and Timberland High School. Both schools have at least an overall C-plus Niche rating. The Timberland High Wolves have won several state titles in wrestling, track, football and basketball competitions. Students have been a part of the beautification effort in Bonneau, with public school students utilizing their artistic skills to paint dazzling murals all over the town.
