Waterfront living in the community of Bonneau
Bonneau is a quaint waterfront town on the eastern shore of Lake Moultrie. This community was founded in the early 20th century. It was the original seat of Berkeley County and was the site of the county’s first high school. According to Realtor and Berkeley County local Tori Beach Williams, Bonneau is where people come to “do what they want to do.” A beautiful range of homes lines rural and lakeside streets in a community with “no HOA. Tourists don’t really come here. You’d have to know Bonneau is there to really visit. It’s a real hidden gem,” says Williams.
Fishing, boating and playing ball around Lake Moultrie
Locals on the waterfront can relax on the waterfront or fish from their private docks. Plenty of public launches are located around the neighborhood for those with fishing boats. Young and adult readers trade books in the Free Little Libraries on various street corners. One street from the lakeshore, the Bonneau Civic Center hosts seasonal events and workshops and provides college scholarships to area students. Along Route 52 and Bonneau’s Main Street, the recreation department hosts large ball fields and public spaces for recreational games and seasonal events.

Bonneau's country homes and lakefront properties
Locals live along wide country roads fringed by dense forest, with lakefront properties featuring private docks and lake access and inland houses having a more secluded and rural character. “Locals want a place where they can do what they want; there’s a lot of retirees,” Realtor Tori Beach Williams said. Tori Beach Williams talks about the residential landscape, saying, “Everything from manufactured homes to beautiful million-dollar waterfront homes, it really has everything.” Cape cods with covered front porches, more modest ranch-style and manufactured houses and new construction line Bonneau’s lakeside avenues and country roads. Home prices vary depending on several factors; for instance, lakeside homes cost anywhere from $280,000 for a small home on a modest lot to as much as $1.1 million dollars for waterfront mansions. More rural homes range from $239,000 for a modest ranch-style house close to a forest preserve to $675,000 for a two-acre contemporary home.
