What daily life looks like in Boomer’s quiet slice of the foothills

Boomer is a rural township a few miles southwest of Wilkesboro, between the Blue Ridge and Brushy Mountains. Life here moves at a slower pace, with outdoor recreation shaping daily schedules. Homes range from older properties with plenty of character to newer builds, many set on large parcels that offer space and privacy. While most errands require a short drive to nearby towns, residents enjoy easy access to W. Kerr Scott Lake, the Yadkin River and popular mountain biking trails. Families are also drawn to the close-knit school district, known for strong ratings and career-focused programs.

Cabins, ranch-style homes and farmhouses on spacious lots

You’ll find a mix of single-family houses here, from ranch-style homes and farmhouses surrounded by fields and pastures to mountainside log cabins and custom builds with private docks on the reservoir, which locals call W. Kerr Scott Lake. “A lot of people choose Boomer because of the proximity to the lake,” says Beth Bare, a Wilkes County native and a Realtor with Realty One Group Results. Many homes were built in the 1960s and the 1970s, but some properties date to the early 1900s and others were built as recently as 2024. Land is a big selling point, with many lots spanning several acres. There are also plenty of open lots ready for a buyer with a vision.

How much buyers can expect to pay for homes and land in Boomer

Boomer’s median sale price is around $340,000, well below the state, national and Moravian Falls medians, but higher than that of Wilkesboro, the closest town. “A lot of people are looking for a mountain home, but they realize they can’t afford the prices in Boone and Blowing Rock. They realize they can get really nice views for much less here,” Bare says. Most homes cost between the lower $100,000s and the upper $400,000s. However, custom waterfront builds and large acreage properties can exceed $1 million. There are also manufactured homes from around $85,000 to the upper $100,000s. For undeveloped lots, prices start under $20,000 for less than an acre and quickly rise to the upper $300,000s for nearly 100 acres.

There are so many ways to explore the outdoors in Wilkes County

Free time here is often spent in the great outdoors. “There are a lot of very nice walking trails and bike trails. People who live here don’t realize it, but we have some of the best mountain biking trails in the U.S.,” Bare says. Popular spots include:

  • Boomer Park, where you can boat, fish and swim in W. Kerr Scott Reservoir
  • Mountain View Overlook, where you can enjoy a picnic with a view
  • Keowee Park, where you can bike along the Overmountain Victory Trail Pump Track
  • Marley Ford Canoe Launch, where you can paddle down the Yadkin River
Nearby towns in the Blue Ridge Mountains, including Blowing Rock, Boone and Deep Gap, offer even more adventures less than an hour away, from hiking and skiing to scenic drives along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

A few basics in town, with more options within a 20-mile drive

In the center of the township, you’ll find a post office as well as Dollar General and Lackey's Market, which have groceries and a few essentials. For a wider selection of shops and restaurants, you’ll need to drive to larger towns, such as:

  • Wilkesboro, which is about 9 miles or 12 minutes away
  • North Wilkesboro, which is about 11 miles or 17 minutes away
  • Taylorsville, which is about 15 miles or 23 minutes away
  • Lenoir, which is about 20 miles or 26 minutes away
For most drives, you’ll end up on State Highway 18, unless you need to cut through the Brushy Mountains via Russell Gap Road.

A highly rated school district with career-focused pathways

Boomer is within the highly rated Wilkes County Schools district. Students typically go to Boomer Ferguson Elementary School, Central Wilkes Middle School and Wilkes Central High School, which offers career and technical education pathways and the college-prep-focused AP Academy. Students can also apply to the highly rated Wilkes Early College High School or request in-district transfers, which are approved on a case-by-case basis.

Job options range from factory work to education and health care roles

Commuting to work outside of the township is common. Wilkes County has a variety of industries, including manufacturing, education and health care. Many jobs are in Wilkesboro and North Wilkesboro, which are home to top employers such as Tyson Foods Inc., Wilkes Community College and Wilkes Medical Center. The town also offers a variety of retail jobs at big-box stores, from Lowe’s Home Improvement to Walmart Supercenter. “A lot of people who live here work remotely, or they’ll travel to Winston-Salem or Charlotte,” Bare says. “Several people drive to Boone to work. It’s about a 45-minute drive. It’s an hour drive to Winston and Hickory.”

Most homes have reliable internet and cell service

Internet and cell service are generally reliable here. Many homes, especially those closer to main roads, have access to fiber internet through RiverStreet (formerly Wilkes Communications) or cable service via Spectrum. In more remote or wooded areas, residents often rely on fixed wireless, 5G home internet or satellite options, which are widely available but may be slower or more weather dependent.
