Sandy River beaches in Oxbow Regional Park
Though the Sandy River neighborhood is conveniently connected to the suburban communities of Gresham and Troutdale, rugged Oregon nature is just beyond its backdoor. The Sandy River hugs Oxbow Regional Park, which has 12 miles of old-growth forest trails, where moss and fern climb the endless trunks of evergreen trees. “It’s a beautiful park with lots of forested areas, some great picnic areas for larger gatherings and access to the wild and scenic Sandy River,” says Hannah Erickson, the communications specialist for Metro Parks and Nature. The Sandy River carries snowmelt and glacial till from Mount Hood, supporting an ecosystem of creatures big and small, from snails to mink, beavers, deer and black bears. The rocky beaches of the river are a summer destination, where swimmers can clamber up larger rocks in the water to dry off in the Oregon sun.Grocers in Gresham and eateries in Troutdale
Residents of the Sandy River neighborhood often travel to nearby communities like Troutdale or Gresham for shopping and enjoying a meal out. While local Weece’s Market has snacks and cold beer, Fred Meyer, WinCo Foods and a Walmart Neighborhood Market in Gresham have more of the essentials. In Troutdale, Skyland Pub serves laid-back fare and a hearty breakfast menu in a traditional sports bar. Its walls are lined with TVs and framed sports jerseys. Four pool tables, six arcade games and an air hockey table are surrounded by TV-covered walls and framed jerseys. Typical of the rural area, the classic sports bar overlooks an agricultural field. Farther south, Silk Espresso serves Portland-famous Stumptown Coffee Roasters, incorporated into espresso drinks like con pannas, affogatos and lattes that come in over 30 flavors. It also offers breakfast treats in its soothing, chic interior filled with natural wood accents and house plants.
Ranch-style homes with workshops and barns on acreage
Homes in Sandy River come in a broad price range. Mid-century, ranch-style homes on around half an acre have land for amateur workshops or other hobby spaces. These older builds cost between $425,000 and $560,000, and they rarely belong to a homeowners association. New traditional builds come in cool gray tones and other modern, neutral color schemes, most often with Craftsman details that look toward the past. New constructions like this fetch between $475,000 and $575,000 and belong to homeowners associations that charge around $25 every month.Properties with more than an acre are often ranch-style homes built after the 1940s with barns, workshops and recreational vehicle hookups. These farm-style properties range from $620,000 to $860,000, while more elaborate constructions with larger square footage can cost between $1.1 million and $1.2 million.
Several roads lead to Portland
Several thoroughfares connect the neighborhood to Portland. Division Street—a road that runs all the way from Gresham to the Willamette River in the center of Rose City—starts in Sandy River. U. S. Highway 26, also known as Powell Boulevard, cuts through the southwest region of the neighborhood and continues west all the way to downtown Portland as well. Alternatively, Interstate 84 runs north of the neighborhood and into the center of the city, which is less than 25 miles away. Otherwise, Troutdale Road bridges the town of its namesake and the Sandy River neighborhood.Alumni association support at Sam Barlow High
Neighborhood children are zoned for the Gresham-Barlow School District, where the youngest students may begin their educations at East Orient Elementary School. One of 37 schools in the Portland area part of the Right Brain Initiative—a program that helps instructors integrate arts education into their curriculums—the school receives a B-minus from Niche. Children may then move forward to B-rated West Orient Middle School before finishing their secondary studies at Sam Barlow High School, which receives a B-minus. The high school has several initiatives to prepare students for post-graduation life, including a comprehensive career and technical education program and an alumni association committed to supporting current students.
