Parks meet city living in Jamaica Plain
Just about 6 miles southwest of Boston, Jamaica Plain exudes an urban feel with access to plenty of nearby green space. The 4.4-square mile neighborhood hosts a large portion of the Emerald Necklace project, a linear park system designed by America’s first coveted landscape architect, Frederick L. Olmsted. “In the center of Jamaica Plain, you feel like you’re in the middle of a city, full of businesses and traffic, but you’re also surrounded by parks. It’s unique to have this much green space and so much density,” says local resident and Realtor, Karen McCormack with Insight Realty Group. For the many residents who work in Downtown Boston, there are three subway stations on the Orange Line in the neighborhood. Jamaica Plain is also known for its diverse community. “It attracts conscious-minded, artistic young people, as well as residents that have been here for generations,” McCormack says. With an array of housing options, local public schools, parks and accessibility, Jamaica Plain provides urban and suburban balance.

An involved, passionate community with plenty of events in Jamaica Plain
With a multicultural community comes diverse events and activities, and Jamaica Plain has everything from dog parades to a thriving pickleball scene. The JP Canine Costume Parade each fall allows four-legged residents to compete for local pet store gift cards, and entry fees go toward the City of Boston Animal Shelter. As pickleball rises in popularity throughout the country, Jamaica Plain has kept up with the trend. “The JP Pickleball group is now over 500 people. It’s a huge draw to the area, where 20-year-old kids and 80-year-olds are all playing together. It’s pretty special,” McCormack says. Another major Jamaica Plain event, Wake Up the Earth, occurs every May and features live music, parades and vendors. The festival celebrates not only “waking up” from winter, but also the diversity of the area. The principal idea of the event is that collaborative efforts across cultures can cultivate change. The notion was born in the 1970s, when residents came together to successfully protest against constructing an appendage of Interstate 95 that would have divided the neighborhood.
Getting outside and active in Jamaica Plain
The largest park in the Emerald Necklace, known as Franklin, connects to Jamaica Plain, with attractions including a golf course, zoo, playgrounds and miles of trails. McCormack mentions that of all the many outdoor gathering spaces in the neighborhood, Jamaica Pond brings in the most traffic. “On a nice day, you almost can’t walk on the paths there because they are teeming with people and dogs.” Attractions here include a 1.5-mile trail and the small body of water, popular for sailing, rowing and fishing. Another major green space is The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, a 281-acre preserve of trees and flora from eastern North America and Asia, which stays open every day of the week and is free to the public. The arboretum also hosts Lilac Sunday each May, where visitors can admire over 400 lilacs and participate in family-friendly tours and picnics.

Grocery stores, restaurants and other facilities on Centre Street
Whole Foods and Stop & Shop are major grocers in the neighborhood, and Target sits about 2 miles away. South Bay Center, about 4 miles away, offers retail options such as Macy’s and The Home Depot. Plenty of restaurants sit along Centre Street, including Vee Vee, which offers patio seating and a limited, selective menu. “It’s the best restaurant in Jamaica Plain. The food is fantastic, it’s small and low key, and serves combos you may not expect. Ever since people realized it was here, it’s really hard to get a table – especially on weekends,” McCormack says. For dessert, J.P. Licks, a locally owned favorite since 1981, has unique ice cream flavors, such as Fruity Pebbles Cereal Milk and Noodle Kugel. There are also numerous churches along Centre Street and a synagogue nearby. The Boston Islamic Center is under 2 miles away, as well.
