Mission Hill is close to the Longwood medical district in Boston

Mission Hill is a vibrant neighborhood that showcases some of Boston’s quintessential features. Located about 4 miles from Downtown Boston on the border of the Longwood Medical & Academic Area, it’s a prime spot for students and professionals who work in the nearby hospitals and research institutions. Brick rowhomes and triple-decker multifamily houses line the pedestrian-friendly streets, and commercial pockets offer eclectic dining choices. To top it off, cultural hot spots like the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston await just beyond Huntington Avenue.

Mission Hill takes its name from a historic church that towers over Tremont Street.

The neighborhood vibe in Mission Hill

“That general area is full of upward-moving people because it has all the top medical facilities around,” says Yves Pierre-Louis, a Realtor with Keller Williams Elite who’s been selling in the area for about 9 years. “It’s a fantastic place for people in the medical industry. Then you have universities, colleges and several museums. The population tends to be younger, just because of everything that’s around there.” While Mission Hill is an active neighborhood with frequent traffic on Huntington Avenue and Tremont Street, its residential side streets have a less hectic feel than denser commercial districts like Downtown Boston, Chinatown or Back Bay.

What to expect from the Mission Hill housing market

Mission Hill is stacked with triple-deckers and other Victorian-era multifamily homes that reflect the area’s late 19th-century growth. A few newer buildings, some added as recently as the 2020s, are also in the mix. Condos and apartments are the most common housing types, and 90 percent of residents are renters. The median rent for this neighborhood is $5,000, and sale prices range from the lower $400,000s for small condos to over $3 million for multiunit investment properties. That puts the median sale price at $519,000, significantly below the medians for nearby neighborhoods like Jamaica Plain, Fenway and Brookline.

Commuting is easy, thanks to ample public transit

The neighborhood’s location and walkable streets make it possible to live a car-free lifestyle. In fact, for many residents, it’s more practical to walk or rely on public transit. “Parking is at a premium,” Pierre-Louis says. “You have homes that have their own spaces, but it’s generally first-come, first-served. In the winter, it’s an issue, because you have to dig out your car, then sometimes you come back to find someone else parked in the spot you just spent half an hour digging out.” Several T stations serve the Green and Orange Lines, and MBTA bus stops are spread throughout the neighborhood. The 4-mile trip to Downtown Boston usually takes 10 to 30 minutes on the T.

The highly rated Boston Latin School is close by

As Pierre-Louis points out, several well-known colleges and universities are nearby, including Boston University and Harvard Medical School. Students who are too young for college can attend schools in the highly rated Boston Public Schools district, which uses a home-based school choice system. One nearby option is Boston Latin School, an exam school serving grades 7 through 12 that Niche ranks as the No. 2 public high school in Massachusetts.

Mission Hill offers dining and drinking spots just beyond Longwood

You’ll find plenty of restaurants and bars in Mission Hill. Here are a few highlights:

  • Solid Ground Cafe, a convenient spot for coffee and breakfast
  • Milkweed, a cafe serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and cocktails
  • Nachlo, a halal restaurant specializing in Moroccan, Pakistani and American fusion cuisine
  • Chilacates, serving Mexican street food like carnitas tacos and carne asada burritos
  • The Puddingstone Tavern, a pub with an impressive draft beer selection
Many of these places are around the intersection of Huntington and Tremont, which makes it easy to grab a bite on the walk home from the Longwood hospitals. One Brigham Circle, a shopping center with a Stop & Shop and a Walgreens, is also in this area.

Neighborhood parks and community buildings invite residents to gather

For a small neighborhood, Mission Hill has quite a few public spaces where you can exercise, socialize or just relax. Tobin Community Center hosts sports programs, arts classes and kids’ programs, including after-school care and summer camp. At Kevin W. Fitzgerald Park, dogs can romp around off leash while their human companions enjoy views of the Boston skyline. Mission Hill Playground offers sports fields, picnic tables and a kids’ play area that includes a splash pad. Next to the playground, the Parker Hill Branch of the Boston Public Library hosts regular events and activities. Examples include all-ages story time, gardening classes and “crafternoons.”

Comparing the different subsections of Mission Hill

Like many Boston neighborhoods, Mission Hill is made up of several subsections. Here’s a brief sampling of what they offer:

  • Brigham Circle: the area’s commercial hub, with ample dining and public transit options
  • Mission Hill Triangle: known for historic architecture
  • Parker Hill: triple-decker apartment houses near neighborhood parks
  • Back of the Hill: a quieter residential pocket with leafy streets
All these sections are relatively close to the Longwood area, but Brigham Circle and Mission Hill Triangle are the most convenient options for folks who work there.

Mission Hill and Roxbury Crossing areas are both neighborhoods in transition. Many student live here now, but even five years ago they were very dangerous. Still transitioning to being fully safe.

Great location near the city but still feels very safe and residential. Lots of awesome restaurants! Easy to navigate and walk around.

Mission Hill gets a bad reputation for being really dangerous. It's definitely not the safest place to be in the city, but if you keep your wits about you things usually are fine.
