Savin Hill is a residential neighborhood on the Dorchester coast
Much of the Savin Hill neighborhood surrounds its namesake, a rocky prominence on the Massachusetts coast. Century-old homes, converted into multi-unit condo buildings, line its streets and residents are a few minutes’ walk from parks and beaches lining coves and inlets on the shoreline. Interstate 93 bisects the neighborhood and connects Savin Hill with Boston to the north. “What attracts people there is the convenience to the best of both worlds,” says Caroline Morson, a Vice President and Realtor with Compass. “You have the beach, you can bicycle and walk around, but on the other hand you can take the T and be downtown in minutes. You get the convenience of the city and urban exposure, but you can step outside without having to go too far and be in this idyllic environment.” Savin Hill is a tight-knit pocket of Massachusetts, where annual beach cleanups and yard sales allow neighbors to mingle while strengthening community bonds.
Homes renovated into multi-condo properties in Savin Hill
Most Savin Hill properties are condos in buildings around a century old. “There has been a lot of developer work done there in the sense they’ve taken these older homes and beautifully renovated them,” Morson says. “They have renovated homes into multi-families. There are two units, maybe four units, in what used to be single-family homes.” The condos typically range in price between $400,000 and $800,000. “The units are large, so you get a lot of bang for your buck space-wise,” Morson says. Multi-family homes often sell for over $1 million. Savin Hill earns a CAP Index crime score of 3 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
School choice within Boston Public Schools
Boston Public Schools serves the area, earning an overall B rating from Niche. Students have the option of school choice within the district. Kids can attend the B-minus-rated Edward Everett Elementary School from kindergarten through sixth grade. The Albert D. Holland School of Technology has a C-plus and enrolls grades 7 through 12. The University of Massachusetts Boston campus is just north of Savin Hill.
Residents can get outdoors at Savin Hill parks, beaches and inlets
Savin Hill Park sits in the neighborhood’s east side. Its centerpiece is Savin Hill itself, which offers city and harbor views atop its hiking trails. Visitors can also play on basketball and tennis courts or go sledding in the winter. “In summertime, you see tennis tournaments there,” Morson says. “It’s really quite something. It sits dead center of Savin Hill, so it’s accessible. Families organize barbecues there in the summertime.”
The Dorchester Bay Basin is lined by Savin Hill Beach and Malibu Beach, both walking distance from homes in the community. Along with boating and swimming off the neighborhood’s edge, Savin Hill Cove also has recreation on terra firma. “You can walk around Savin Hill Cove,” Morson says. “There is a lot of green, and there are all these paths you can walk and bike.” McConnell Park offers several baseball fields . Other spots include Robert E. Ryan Playground on the west side, which offers play equipment and a splash pad.
Yard sales and cleanups bring the Savin Hill community together
The Savin Hill Neighborhood Yard Sale takes place each September and can include over 50 households, and residents and visitors alike walk around the community to check out each home’s offerings. “Everybody has their stuff out, so you can walk block after block after block,” Morson says. “It’s really well-attended and really fun. People are walking around, really happy with whatever they found.” The community has held the Savin Hill Shoreline Cleanup for over 40 years, when locals come together to help pick up trash along the beaches.
Eclectic restaurants serve Dorchester residents
Savin Hill is also home to a vibrant collection of locally owned businesses. “You have mom-and-pop coffee shops and the same thing with the little stores,” Morson says. “They’re a little more boutique-y, as opposed to what you see downtown, so you do have more character.” Dora Taqueria and Bahn Mi Ba Le & Bakery each serve international fare, while McKenna’s Café and the Honeycomb Café are breakfast staples. Avenue Grille & Pizzeria serves American, Italian and Mexican food. Harp + Bard and The Banshee Pub are popular for watching sports. Groceries are available at Stop & Shop about 2 miles south of Savin Hill, while Target sits less than 5 miles in the opposite direction.
Savin Hill locals can get around by car, bus or train
Interstate 93 runs through the community, linking Savin Hill with Boston, less than 5 miles north. “You’re still close to Downtown Boston and still so close to everything the city of Boston has to offer,” Morson says. “You’re a bit outside of it, but close enough to hop on the T and get downtown.” Residents can also take the MBTA Red Line to Boston from Savin Hill station, a trip that usually takes under 20 minutes. MBTA buses run along Dorchester Avenue. Air travelers can fly out of Boston Logan International Airport. Boston Medical Center offers care less than 4 miles northwest.
