Dining all along Washington Street

Washington Street is the area's most prominent artery because of the restaurants and businesses that line it. Fairouz is one dining option, a well-liked destination for Lebanese food where the shawarma plates are particularly popular. Those who like to eat at home can trek to the Greek International Food Market and grab fresh ingredients — from olive oil to pickled roasted red peppers. Viva Mi Arepa, across from the Greek International Food Market, is an acclaimed Venezuelan restaurant. To the north, off Spring Street, is Joe's 320 Café, a cozy spot specializing in weekend brunch.

Hiking the Stony Brook Reservation

Draper Playground is well-loved for its abundance of open space; residents like to visit to picnic, play on the playground and run around the athletic fields. For hiking, locals can head to the 475-acre Stony Brook Reservation, which includes the trails off Enneking Parkway and Bellevue Hill Park. “A big selling point of this neighborhood is that it’s right down the street from Bellevue Park,” says Michelle Lane, Realtor at Michelle Lane Real Estate who has sold in the area before. “It’s mostly just woods, but there’s lots of walking paths, and people like to take their dogs for walks in there.” Havey Beach is also a popular spot. Locals like to launch boats and kayaks onto the Charles River from the area, and it also features a year-round indoor ice rink.

Homes for first-timers and empty-nesters

Houses represent a diverse mix of properties built during the 20th and 21st centuries. “There was a midcentury building boom in the area,” says Realtor Steve Morris of LAER Realty Partners, “so there is a solid smattering of homes from that era in particular.” Cape Cods and colonials are some of the styles common to the neighborhood. The smaller midcentury options on the Spring Street side serve as good starter or empty-nester homes for people looking to downsize. Residential corridors on the Spring Street side tend to be organized in a grid fashion, while winding streets are more the norm on the Upper Washington side. Home prices encompass a wide range, anywhere from $600,000 to about $1 million.

Among the public schools in Upper Washington-Spring Street is Kilmer K-8 School, which has a B-minus Niche score, and New Mission High School, which has a B. Transit galore around Upper Washington-Spring Street

Lane says, "Most homes are within walking distance of at least three different bus stops, and the area is about 1 mile from the commuter train.
