Throughout the neighborhood, there are several parks to enjoy. Children can visit the Crawford Street Playground or scamper around the boulders at Horatio Harris Park, which lies in a historic section of the neighborhood. Malcolm X Park, originally built in 1867, has since doubled in size to 10 acres and features a pool, skating rink and baseball field. Beside the park is Malcolm X's childhood home, the Malcolm X and Ella Little-Collins House. Boston Public Schools, the largest district in Massachusetts, serves students in Washington Park. Students in the district receive several choices of schools; in addition, they may opt to apply for magnet and charter schools. One of the elementary schools within the community is David A. Ellis Elementary School, which earns a C on Niche. Students at Ellis enjoy access to an art library and the adjacent National Center of Afro-American Artists. After completing their elementary studies, students may attend the C-plus-rated Dearborn STEM Academy, which serves grades six through 12. Students may also apply to Boston Latin Academy, which has an A rating. The Boston area is never at a shortage of things to do. Locals can hop on the nearby T lines to find their way to baseball games, concerts and city-wide festivals. In addition, there are several events in Franklin Park. On Thanksgiving Day, runners can take part in the annual Turkey Trot 5K, which welcomes participants of all ages. The Kite & Bike Festival each May marks the return of warm weather to Boston. Throughout the summer months, there are free outdoor concerts at the Overlook Shelter in the park.
