Amber Meadows offers commuters easy access to Baltimore and D.C.
Situated on the west side of U.S. Route 301, Amber Meadows is a small south Bowie community with a convenient location. “Route 301 connects with Interstate 97, and that’s a straight shot north into Baltimore,” says Ruth Zimmerman, a Realtor with Weichert and a Bowie resident. She adds that highway accessibility is Amber Meadows’ main draw. “Neighborhoods near major highways are typically the most desirable because Bowie is such a commuter-oriented city.” Commuters can also reach Washington, D.C., with a 20-mile drive west on nearby U.S. Route 50. Aside from highways, locals have easy access to essential Bowie destinations, like the Bowie Town Center, home to over 70 stores and restaurants, and Allen Pond Park, which offers fishing, boating and ice skating.
Route 50 is just a few miles north and will take you to Annapolis or DC from Bowie.
Central Avenue will take you to Washington or Annapolis from Tall Oaks Crossing.

Amber Meadows residents have plenty of ways to reach major cities. Commuters can take a 5-mile drive to Route 50, then take that highway 15 miles west to Washington, D.C. Zimmerman warns that the drive may take a while. “Most days, I can get to the city in a little less than an hour. The longest it’s taken me [to get to D.C.] is probably about 2 hours, but that was during rush hour.” There are a few Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority bus stops along Mitchellville Road, and that ride can take 40 minutes to an hour depending on traffic. The Maryland Area Regional Commuter train station at Bowie State University, less than 9 miles north, follows the Penn Line, reaching downtown D.C. in 30 minutes. It also carries commuters to downtown Baltimore in about 45 minutes, while a drive to Baltimore is 30 miles north on Route 301 and I-97. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is 25 miles west, and the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is just as close to the north. The University of Maryland Bowie Health Center is less than 4 miles north of the neighborhood.

A long-standing baseball complex and proximity to Allen Pond Park
On Amber Meadows’ northern end, Blacksox Park was once home to the Washington Blacksox and the Mitchellville Tigers, two African-American sandlot baseball teams that played between the 1930s and ‘70s. Today, youth leagues, like Bowie Baseball and the Maryland Blue Jays, still play on the 70-acre park’s baseball diamonds. A dragon-themed playground sits outside the South Bowie Community Center, less than a mile south of the neighborhood. The community center also has exercise equipment, pickleball courts and a basketball court. Several houses of worship sit along Mitchellville Road, including St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church and the Village Baptist Church. The 85-acre Allen Pond Park is 2 miles north of the neighborhood. “It’s the best and biggest park in town,” Zimmerman says. “If someone says they’re going to the park, they’re talking about Allen Pond.” Locals can hike around the namesake pond, which is stocked with bluegill and largemouth bass for anglers. Paddle boats are available to rent at the boathouse during the summer, while the ice arena offers year-round figure skating lessons and hockey leagues.
