Buckingham has midcentury homes on quarter-acre lots
Houses built throughout the 1960s dot Buckingham’s cracked, asphalt streets. Cape Cod cottages, Colonial Revivals and ranch styles in red brick and beige vinyl often sit on quarter-acre lots. White oak and red maple shade trees are common, and houses usually have three to four bedrooms and attached garages. Prices tend to be similar to Bowie’s average $500,000 selling price. Buying here can cost between $415,000 and $550,000.Football, hiking and a community theater at Whitemarsh Park
Locals can walk along Storybrook Drive to reach the 182-acre Whitemarsh Park on the neighborhood’s northern end. “Whitemarsh is where a lot of kids play sports, so it’s nice for parents in Buckingham to be able to walk there,” Cooper says. Bats crack as little leagues play on the park’s softball diamond, and referees blow whistles during football games on the turf field. Nearly 2 miles of trailway stretch under beech and sycamore trees and pass by the park’s namesake creek. Kids can run around on the playground, which has a slide structure shaped like a football helmet and a swing set made of lacrosse sticks. The 150-seat Bowie Playhouse is at the park's core. It hosts two community theater groups: 2nd Star Productions and Bowie Community Theatre. Past performances include “Hairspray,” “The Sound of Music” and “A Christmas Carol.” Locals can also walk to Buckingham Park, a 10-acre green space on Barberry Lane with another baseball diamond and a small playground.A mile west of the neighborhood, Belair Mansion was once the 18th-century estate and tobacco plantation of Maryland Governor Samuel Ogle. Today, the Georgian-style mansion is a museum where visitors can tour its antique furniture and walk the grounds, home to the original horse stables of two Triple Crown champions. The mansion has a featured exhibit titled “African-American Slaves at Belair” that tells the stories of the resistance of those who were enslaved there.
Prince George’s County Public Schools are within walking distance
Children can attend Kenilworth Elementary School, Benjamin Tasker Middle School and Bowie High School, all earning B-minus grades from Niche. The high school offers Career and Technical Education pathway programs in fields like teaching, construction design management and architecture and design. Each school is within a mile and a half of Buckingham, putting them within Prince George’s County Public Schools’ walking zone. Bowie State University is less than 5 miles north of the neighborhood.Easy access to U.S. Route 50 and Maryland state Route 3
Though locals can walk to parks and schools, Buckingham is a car-dependent community. U.S. Route 50 is just south of the neighborhood. An 18-mile drive west on the highway leads to Washington. Maryland state Route 3 on the neighborhood’s eastern edge leads to Baltimore, with a 30-mile drive north. Depending on traffic, driving to D.C. or Baltimore can both take 45 minutes to an hour. The neighborhood also has several Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority bus stops. A Maryland Area Regional Commuter train station is less than 5 miles north at Bowie State University. It follows the Penn Line, reaching downtown D.C. in 30 minutes. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is 20 miles west, while the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is just as close to the north.Nearby grocery stores and more shopping at Bowie Town Center
Several chain retailers anchor the Free State Shopping Center, less than a mile north of the neighborhood on Annapolis Road. Shoppers can grab groceries at Harris Teeter or Giant. There’s also a T.J. Maxx, Five Below and Petco. Restaurants include fast-food places, like Chick-fil-A and Taco Bell, and a few local options. Red booths fill Anthony’s NY Pizza & Pasta House, while pastel-colored macarons and cheesecake slices sit in the glass case at The Dessert Junkie. But even with these nearby conveniences, Cooper says locals still drive 4 miles south to Bowie Town Center. “It’s the only mall in the city, and there’s not a downtown area in Bowie, so everything shopping and dining related happens at the town center.” The open-air shopping center has over 70 stores, including Macy’s, Best Buy and Barnes & Noble. The University of Maryland Bowie Health Center is less than 3 miles southwest of the neighborhood.
