A central Bowie neighborhood with convenience to D.C., Baltimore and shopping centers
Surrounded by major highways and essential shopping centers, Heather Hills offers a prime location at the heart of Bowie. U.S. Route 50 on the neighborhood’s northern edge leads to Washington, D.C., while U.S. Route 301, to the east, reaches Baltimore. “Almost everyone in Bowie commutes to D.C. or Baltimore,” says Tina Marie Marshall, the broker-owner of MD Prime Realty Co., who has sold several homes in the area. “Houses near Route 50 and Route 301 are typically the most sought after because of that.” Shoppers have easy access to Bowie Gateway Center, home to the city’s only Target, and Bowie Town Center, which has over 70 nationally known retailers. But despite these city conveniences, Heather Hills maintains a quiet suburban character, with a namesake elementary school and nearby recreational spaces, like the East Coast Greenway and Allen Pond Park.
Heather Hills is a serene neighborhood ideal for families and outdoor lovers.

A park and ride lot is near Heather Hills
D.C. is a 19-mile drive west on Route 50. Marshall warns that the drive may take a bit. “If it’s not rush hour, the drive is like 30 minutes, but if it is rush hour, it can take over an hour.” The Northview Drive Park and Ride Lot, which has just over 650 spaces, is a half-mile west of the neighborhood. Commuters can park in the lot and hop on a Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority bus, offering direct routes to Metro stations in Downtown Largo and New Carrollton and the Maryland Area Regional Commuter at Bowie State University, 6 miles north. The MARC station follows the Penn Line, reaching downtown D.C. in about 30 minutes and Baltimore in an hour. A 30-mile drive north on Route 301 also reaches Baltimore.
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is 23 miles west, and the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is just as close to the north. The University of Maryland Bowie Health Center is a mile and a half west of the neighborhood.
Target at Bowie Gateway Center and more shopping at Bowie Town Center
On the neighborhood’s eastern edge, The Bowie Gateway Center has stores like Target, Burlington and Michaels, plus fast food staples like McDonald’s and Wendy’s. A few restaurants are also on Major Lansdale Boulevard, including Smokey Jones, a regional barbecue chain, and Jerry’s Seafood, known for serving fresh crab cakes and other seafood dishes since 2008. Bowie Town Center is less than about a mile south of the neighborhood. “It’s basically Bowie’s mall and downtown area wrapped in one,” Marshall says. “It’s really nice. People from Upper Marlboro and Largo will drive up to shop there.” As shoppers walk around the open-air town center, they can pop into retailers like Macy’s, Barnes & Noble and Foot Locker.

Heather Hills Elementary is within walking distance
Children can attend Heather Hills Elementary, earning a B-plus from Niche. They may continue to Benjamin Tasker Middle and Bowie High, both earning B-minus grades. The high school offers Career and Technical Education pathway programs in agriculture, health and business management. Though Heather Hills doesn’t have sidewalks, Marshall says it’s not uncommon for students to walk to the elementary school. “If a Bowie neighborhood has its own school, kids almost always walk to it.” The middle and high school are both over a mile and a half away, putting them outside Prince George’s County Public Schools district-designated walking zones.

The East Coast Greenway is easily accessible
New Town Park borders Heather Hills to the west. Kids can run around the playground and play soccer on the wide-open green space. The park also offers access to the East Coast Greenway, a 3,000-mile trail network stretching from Maine to Florida. Most of Bowie’s portion of the trail is on-road and recommended for bike riders only, but New Town Park is part of the short pedestrian section. Locals can follow the path a little over a mile north to reach Foxhill Park, home to tennis and basketball courts. A stone bridge circa the 1920s crosses over the park’s manmade pond, where anglers can catch bass from the shoreline. Allen Pond Park, Bowie’s largest green space, is 2 miles south of the neighborhood. A skate park, indoor ice arena and stocked fishing pond cover the 85-acre terrain.
