Built by an innovator of American suburbs
The developer credited with pioneering the modern American suburb used that vision to create Meadowbrook. William Levitt, whose company revolutionized homebuilding after World War II with the design of Levittown, New York, came to Bowie, Maryland, in the 1950s. His company bought the estate surrounding the Belair mansion, where it built thousands of homes, including the 930 properties that make up Meadowbrook. It was planned like a typical midcentury subdivision, with ranch homes and Colonial revivals along winding, sidewalk-lined streets. However, the neighborhood’s inorganic beginning doesn’t mean it lacks culture or community spirit. St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church maintains the Little Free Pantry, a wooden box where locals can donate or pick up food and hygiene products. Next door, the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts welcomes comedians from across the country each month. Another benefit: Meadowbrook is within commuting distance of Annapolis, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

Bowie plans to expand its lush tree cover
It’s easy for locals to know when they leave one Bowie neighborhood and enter another; streets all start with the same letter as the neighborhood itself. For example, Meadowbrook residents may live on Moylan Drive or Madeley Lane. Prices typically vary from $400,000 to $575,000. Bowie neighborhoods are known for their abundant tree cover, and Meadowbrook is no different. It’s rare to see a yard without an oak or maple, and stands of trees buffer the residential areas from schools, churches and highways. “One of the beautiful things is the older trees that surround most of the homes here,” says Monica Bryant, a Bowie resident and Realtor at Century 21 New Millennium. “They just lend to the appeal of the neighborhood. It’s not too many trees that you have to do a lot of yard work.” Bowie’s tree canopy covers 42% of the city, higher than the national average, and the city council set 45% as a long-term goal. Just east of Meadowbrook, Colonial-inspired townhouses sell in the high $200,000s. On average, homes in the neighborhood sell within 19 days, or less than half the time as the national average.

Lightsabers and stormtroopers at Prince George’s Stadium
The heavy tree canopy at Meadowbrook Neighborhood Park shades the tennis courts, play area and walking trail. Artificial stumps and toadstools provide climbing spots and lend a natural look to the playground, which features a large jungle gym and a smaller one for toddlers. Members of Belair Swim & Racquet Club have access to a pool as well as tennis and pickleball courts. Meanwhile, the Chesapeake Baysox play 4 miles south at Prince George’s Stadium. A minor league affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, the Baysox do frequent promotions such as Star Wars Night, when stormtroopers and lightsaber-wielding fans roam the ballpark. The team also provides free tickets to local students who complete reading programs.

The market sets up in the Bowie High School parking lot on Saturdays from May to October. The Bowie Branch Library and Bowie Center for the Performing Arts stand alongside the same lot. Groups rent out the latter for plays and concerts, while the arts center organizes summer camps for kids. Quick access to retail, restaurant chains
