Pointer Ridge
Neighborhood in Bowie, Maryland
Prince George's County 20716
Ramblers and Colonial Revivals with neat landscaping
An organized suburb with peaceful, curving streets, Pointer Ridge is filled with comfortable, ranch-style and Colonial Revival homes. Properties sit on about a third of an acre of land, so grassy front lawns decorated with shrubbery, stone walkways and tall trees fill the neighborhood. “Houses are priced very well for the square footage and what you get; most are around $400,000 to $600,000, which you won’t find in areas closer to D.C.,” says Bill Franklin, a broker with Long & Foster Real Estate who’s served Bowie for decades. Constructed in the 1970s and ‘80s, Pointer Ridge’s ranches, ramblers and Colonial Revivals sometimes cost as little as $300,000, but most are priced in the $400,000 to $600,000 range.Sports fields, playgrounds and walking trails near Pointer Ridge
Pointer Ridge is close to popular recreational spaces, like Mitchellville South Neighborhood Park, where youth sports teams play on the soccer field and teenagers meet for pickup games on the basketball courts. There’s also a large playground with a jungle gym and several tennis courts. About 3 miles north of the neighborhood is Allen Pond Park, where locals go on afternoon strolls around the water or take their kids to the playground. The pond also has paddle boats available for rent, and fishing spots where anglers cast their lines into the water. When it’s too cold to spend time outside, there’s the Sky Zone Trampoline Park, where kids bounce from trampolines into foam pits and scramble through obstacle courses.Career preparation programs at Bowie High School
Kids may go to the neighborhood’s aptly named Pointer Ridge Elementary School, which has a C-plus rating from Niche. “The community is built up around the schools. A lot of parents can walk their kids to their local elementary school,” Franklin says. Students live a couple of miles south of Benjamin Tasker Middle School and Bowie High School, however. Both schools earn B-minus ratings from Niche. Bowie High offers a career pathway program where students can enroll in programs to study food and beverage management, construction and homeland security.Bus lines to Metrorail stations and major highways nearby
Most of the neighborhood’s roads don’t have sidewalks, but the residential streets are quiet enough for neighborly strolls and family bike rides. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority operates bus stops in the neighborhood; route C26 heads to the Metrorail station in Downtown Largo. From there, commuters can board the Silver or Blue line to head toward Washington, D.C. Drivers can also merge onto U.S. Route 50 to make the 22-mile-trek northwest to D.C. or drive 18 miles northeast to Annapolis, Maryland. Baltimore is a little under 40 miles north on Interstate 97.Chain restaurants and big box retailers located 3 miles from Pointer Ridge
There aren’t restaurants or stores in Pointer Ridge, but shopping centers with extensive retail and dining options are about 3 miles north of the neighborhood. Big box retailers like Walmart, Home Depot and Lowes sit along U.S. Route 301. Nearby, the Bowie Town Center mall has well-known retailers like Macy’s, Barnes & Noble, Men’s Wearhouse and Five Below. Residents can pick up groceries at Giant or Safeway. The area has a wide array of chain restaurants, including Chipotle, IHOP, Raising Cane’s, Olive Garden and First Watch. Still, there are a few family-owned restaurants like Rips Country Inn, a long-standing, rustic eatery that serves comfort food like roast beef sandwiches, cornbread and bread pudding.
