A low-key suburb of single-family homes in Bowie

When employees who work in Baltimore or Washington, D.C., tire of the bustle and relocate to the suburbs, they often look to Bowie, where subdivisions like Pointer Ridge offer a calm and convenient lifestyle. The southern Bowie neighborhood has a local elementary school within walking distance of some homes, and the Bowie Town Center shopping center is a 3-mile drive from Pointer Ridge. Locals can walk to parks with playgrounds and sports courts or drive to larger green spaces like Allen Pond Park, where they go boating or fishing. Residents live about 20 miles from the nation’s capital and 35 miles from Baltimore, Maryland’s largest city, allowing them to commute to these major metropolitan areas and return home to their low-key community in Pointer Ridge.

Ramblers and Colonial Revivals with neat landscaping

An organized suburb with peaceful, curving streets, Pointer Ridge is filled with comfortable, ranch-style and Colonial Revival homes. Properties sit on about a third of an acre of land, so grassy front lawns decorated with shrubbery, stone walkways and tall trees fill the neighborhood. “Houses are priced very well for the square footage and what you get; most are around $400,000 to $600,000, which you won’t find in areas closer to D.C.,” says Bill Franklin, a broker with Long & Foster Real Estate who’s served Bowie for decades. Constructed in the 1970s and ‘80s, Pointer Ridge’s ranches, ramblers and Colonial Revivals sometimes cost as little as $300,000, but most are priced in the $400,000 to $600,000 range.
