A riverfront community in Prince George’s County
Situated along the banks of the Patuxent River, Queen Anne was once a bustling tobacco port in the 1700s. Though that industry is no longer present, life still revolves around the river in this Prince George’s County community. Locals can fish alongside historic bridges, hike waterside trails, and kayak and canoe among the river’s lush greenery. This natural setting is the area’s main draw. “It’s the countryside,” says Lori Jean Buongiovanni, a Realtor with RE/Max Realty Group who has sold several houses here. “You can stop at farmstands to get food and you’ll drive past horse farms on your way to work.” She adds that Queen Anne is also conveniently located, with U.S. Route 301 on its western edge. “Commuters can get to Baltimore or Washington, D.C., in under two hours. And Bowie has tons of shopping centers, so it’s not completely rural.”
Patuxent River Park is no stranger to nice scenery.

Houses sit on large lots
Bowie’s earliest homes include ranch-styles from the 1960s and ‘70s. New Traditional houses and Colonial Revivals built between the 1990s and 2020s are also common. The median lot size is 2 acres, with some homes backing up to dense oak forests. Houses often have three to five bedrooms and long driveways leading to one- to two- car garages. Prices tend to be higher than the national median, with older homes starting around $450,000, while newer homes may reach $1 million.

Fishing, hiking and boating on the Patuxent River
In the 1700s, the Queen Anne Bridge over the Patuxent River was a main road between Prince George’s County and Anne Arundel County. The bridge has been rebuilt several times and still stands today. It’s now closed to pedestrians, but anglers can fish near the bridge on the river’s muddy banks and catch fish like bluegill and crappie. A 2-mile hiking trail runs along the waterway at Wootons Landing Park. Kayakers and canoers can paddle past the river’s cattail marshes and arrow arum patches after they launch their boats off the green space’s wooden docks. “On a warm day, everybody is on the river, and parking lots outside of any river park get absolutely packed,” Buongiovanni says.
Queen Anne is near a few other recreation spaces, like the 18-hole Renditions Golf Course on the community’s east side. The sound of bat cracks fills the air at Prince George’s Stadium, home of the Minor League Chesapeake Baysox, about 6 miles north. Buongiovanni says locals also visit Chesapeake Bay beaches, several of which are about 15 miles east. “The Patuxent River is a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay, so all those beaches are really close, and people will make a day trip out of it.”

Queen Anne has farmstands, horse stables and longstanding churches
On Central Avenue, Queen Anne Farm has a summer produce stand that sells seasonal items like sweet corn, watermelon and peaches. Locals visit the farm every fall to pick pumpkins, run through haybale mazes and buy fresh mums. Horses trot across rolling fields at Great Escape Stables, a boarding and training facility also located on Central Avenue. Several houses of worship are in the area, including the Greater Mt. Nebo African Methodist Episcopal Church, which was founded in 1877 by formerly enslaved individuals. Though the original cemetery and one-story church still exist, the parish expanded with a new building in 2010 and now has over 1,000 members.

D.C. and Baltimore commuters drive on Route 301
Route 301 eventually connects with Route 50, making Washington, D.C., a 25-mile drive northwest. Baltimore is a 33-mile drive north on Route 301 and Interstate 97. Depending on traffic, the drive to either city can take one to two hours. Buongiovanni says there are ways to make both commutes shorter. “You have to leave fairly early to avoid standstill traffic. Getting out of the house around 6 or 7 a.m. is typically good enough.” There are no bus stops here, and the closest train station is at Bowie State University. It’s along the Maryland Area Rail Commuter’s Penn-Washington Line, typically reaching downtown D.C. and Baltimore in under an hour.
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport are both less than 30 miles away. The University of Maryland Bowie Health Center, 7 miles north, is the closest hospital.
Route 50 runs from New York Avenue in DC to Ocean City, through the middle of Bowie.
Queen Anne residents can take Route 301 all the way to Baltimore.
