Rockledge is one of Bowie’s original suburban neighborhoods from the 1960s with convenient access to its own park, a paved rail trail and Bowie Golf Club. Bowie was once a valuable train junction due to its proximity to several major cities in the region, and today, neighborhoods like Rockledge have become affordable bedroom communities for the same reason. “Everything’s [near] here, with access to MARC trains and public transit; it's [also] situated so you can get to D.C., Baltimore and Annapolis quickly because there are highways close by,” says Bill Franklin, a former Bowie local and team leader at Bill Franklin Real Estate Group with Long & Foster Real Estate.

Classic post-World War II homes line Rockledge's streets
Rockledge is predominantly single-family homes built in the city’s original expansion in the early 1960s. That expansion was started by developer William Levitt, who helped popularize suburbs in the U.S. Buyers can find Cape Cods, bilevels and brick ramblers for lower prices than some of the city’s newer neighborhoods. “Levitt homes are featured here and around the city of Bowie,” Franklin says. “They tend to be priced lower than the new developments with HOAs and larger houses, which can range from $700,000 to $1 million.” Rockledge homes are priced from $350,000 to $550,000, varying by square footage.

Nearby Prince George's County public schools
Prince George’s County Public Schools is Bowie's main school district. Students in the neighborhood can attend Rockledge Elementary, which gets a C-rating on Niche, Samuel Ogle Middle and Bowie High School, which both get B-minus ratings. Bowie High features its own accelerated college prep course called the Summit Program, available to underclassmen to prepare them for Advanced Placement courses.
Many high schoolers in the Bowie neighborhood attend Bowie High School.

Bowie Golf Club and the upcoming City of Bowie Ice Arena
Rockledge Park is surrounded by homes and features a playground, tennis courts and a ball field. Just north of Rockledge is the Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis Trail, a paved multipurpose path built on top of one of the city’s original railways and stretching more than 5 miles through Bowie. Locals can tee off at the public Bowie Golf Club, just across Laurel-Bowie Road. Next to the golf course, the City of Bowie Ice Arena is expected to open in the fall of 2026. When built, the arena will be 49,000 square feet and include an NHL-sized ice rink with bleachers, a concession stand, a skate rental area and two rooms for private events.

Several Bowie strip malls within reach
Bowie Plaza is southwest of the neighborhood and hosts Ledo Pizza, an Annapolis-based chain serving Maryland-style pies, which are rectangular and made with a sweet red sauce. Along Annapolis Road to the south is Bowie Marketplace, a shopping center with a Harris Teeter grocery store. Bowie Town Center is 4 miles south and houses over 70 retailers, including Macy’s.

Between Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis
