The beginning of Bowie’s suburban transformation
Modern-day Bowie was born in Somerset. The small neighborhood was the first that developer Levitt and Sons built in Bowie in the early ‘60s, and the company followed with thousands of additional homes, transforming the Maryland town that only had 600 residents at the time. When Levitt and Sons created Somerset, the company was known for its budget-friendly homes. Today, Bowie is a city where the median household income is much higher than the statewide median and nearly twice the national median. “Bowie is recognized as one of the wealthiest towns in Prince George’s County,” says Simone Malloy, an associate broker with HomeSmart who is based in Bowie. “It’s the area where the most affluent within the community reside.” Somerset is located near U.S. Route 50, which leads to lucrative jobs in and around Washington.

Levitt and Sons brought innovative building methods to Somerset
Levitt and Sons gained notoriety after World War II for its assembly-line approach to building homes, simplifying the construction process and breaking it down into steps that could be quickly repeated. Using this process, crews built hundreds of Colonial Revival homes, ranch-style houses and Cape Cods in Somerset. The developer took steps to avoid a cookie-cutter feel; they included alternating the home styles along each street and installing winding roads and cul-de-sacs. Prices are comparable to the rest of Bowie, with homes typically selling for between $430,000 and $600,000.

Accessing playgrounds and bike trails at Somerset Park, Whitemarsh Park
Houses are within a mile of Somerset Park, located near the center of the neighborhood. The two tree-shaded playgrounds were designed for specific age groups, one welcoming toddlers and the other for children ages 5 to 12. A path on the east end of Somerset leads from the neighborhood to Whitemarsh Park, a 182-acre green space with a turf football field, bike trails through the woods and the 150-seat Bowie Playhouse theater. Around the same time it developed Somerset, Levitt and Sons built Belair Bath and Tennis next to the neighborhood. People who pay to join the club have access to tennis courts and a swimming pool.
Somerset Park's playground also has a small jungle gym.
