A planned community of modern homes, amenities and shopping
There’s development happening on the outskirts of the city of Bowie, and new, mixed-used communities of sleek homes are popping up in areas like South Lake. “We have two groups of people in Bowie: people, like my grandparents, who have owned their home in Bowie for decades, and younger families who are relocating into the new townhouses being built at the edge of town,” says Krista Blase, a Bowie native who works for the city. South Lake is still very much in the midst of its development, but it already has a variety of modern apartment buildings, townhouses and single-family homes, all of which were built in 2022 or later. Residents pay just over $100 monthly for HOA fees and have access to a community pool, dog park, fitness center and network of walking trails. Though the entire community is not scheduled to be completed until 2028, some retail and restaurant spaces will open in 2025 in the neighborhood's new shopping center, South Lake Marketplace.
Most of South Lake is residential with most of the homes being on the newer side.
South Lake maybe mostly residential, but it has proximity to Bowie shopping and DC.

Community recreational spaces in the works in South Lake
Residents take advantage of South Lake’s communal amenities, which include an indoor gym, pool and walking trails, but there are other recreational opportunities close by. The neighborhood is just north of Liberty Sports Park, which has turf and grass soccer fields where recreational leagues and youth sports teams play. One of Bowie's largest parks is 4 miles north of the community. “Allen Pond Park is the one that everyone thinks of when they think of a park in Bowie. We have the pond with trails, and then the ice arena next to it,” Blase says. The green space has quiet fishing spots and trails that loop around the water, as well as a large playground. Children learn to skate or play ice hockey at the Bowie Ice Arena, right by the park. Blase adds that Allen Pond Park is also the venue for many of the city’s events, including Bowiefest, a summer celebration with food trucks and community music and dance performances.

New shopping and dining opening at South Lake Marketplace
Part of the neighborhood's mixed-use development includes South Lake Marketplace, which will have a Giant supermarket and a mix of local and chain restaurants and retailers. The shopping plaza is scheduled to be completed in 2025, so while waiting for these new places to open, residents can drive a few miles north to go shopping or out to eat. About 5 miles north is the Bowie Town Center retail area, which has stores like Men’s Wearhouse, Torrid, Barnes & Noble and Famous Footwear, along with chain restaurants like Chipotle Mexican Grill, Noodles and Company, Mezeh and Red Robin. There are also a few more regional eateries, like Sardi's Pollo A La Brasa, which serves Peruvian chicken and sides, and the Twisted Crab, a casual seafood spot. Big box stores like Target and Walmart and supermarkets like Safeway make shopping for essentials easy.
South Lake has one small shopping plaza where residents can try out Blessed Hands Cuisine.
