Downtown Bowling Green
Renovated historic homes on small city lots
The small city lots of Downtown Bowling Green are occupied mainly by Craftsman cottages, American Foursquares and Colonial-style homes, reflecting the area’s development throughout the years. “Mostly, there are a lot of single-family homes. There are apartments at the university, but we don’t have a lot of high-rise condos or anything like that,” says Realtor Justin Reesy, Team Owner with Keller Williams 1st Choice, who has over 17 years of experience in the area. “There are lots of historic properties, many that have been remodeled several times through their lifespans.” Sidewalks thread the community together, shaded by tall leafy trees that fill with Eastern tent caterpillars in the spring. Homes in need of more extensive renovations typically price between $130,000 and $250,000, while move-in ready options range from $350,000 to $650,000.Live music and trendy eateries in South Central Kentucky
Reesy says that downtown is full of popular local restaurants. “The cuisine and the nightlife in this part of town range from little honky-tonk bars to these quiet, classy speakeasy-type joints,” he says. “It gets pretty busy on weekends, but you’ll be able to find something no matter what kind of mood you’re in.” These include Gerard’s 1907 Tavern, which offers sandwiches and pub fare, and Donna’s, an intimate dive with billiard tables and regular live music. Other popular restaurants include AzziPizza and Novo Dolce, a gastro pub. The Kroger of Riverside Center is the closest supermarket, although small bodegas and convenience stores can be found throughout the neighborhood. Residents will need to venture beyond the community to pick up household necessities at Walmart.Minor league baseball, summer concerts in the park and the SKYPAC
There’s no shortage of entertainment options in downtown Bowling Green. “We have the Bowling Green Hot Rods, a high single-A minor league baseball team,” Reesy says. “Their ballpark is downtown, and that’ll draw crowds on game days. We also have the SKyPAC – the Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center – which hosts all kinds of concerts and shows.” Other popular events include concerts in Circus Square Park and the Bowling Green International Festival, which brings 15,000 visitors to the downtown area annually.Well-regarded public schools and an established state university
Local children are zoned to attend T.C. Cherry Elementary School, which earns a B from Niche. They then proceed to Bowling Green Junior High, rated A-minus. Bowling Green High earns an A and boasts a strong boys' basketball program. The downtown area is also the home of Western Kentucky University, a public four-year institution established in 1906.Circus Square Park and Roland Bland Park offer outdoor amenities
In addition to hosting the summer concert series, Circus Square Park features a splash pad and several patches of green lawn. Just across College Street, residents can lace up their skates for pickup hockey games at the SoKY Ice Rink. Roland Bland Park’s list of amenities includes a pair of playgrounds, several tennis and pickleball courts and a skate park. Two U.S. highways encircle Downtown Bowling Green
The downtown district is ringed by major thruways, including the U.S. Highway 31 Bypass and U.S. Highway 68. These two roads provide the most direct routes to Interstate 65, a major north-south connector for the state of Kentucky. The GoBG bus line provides affordable public transportation throughout the city, making getting around downtown simple.
