North Bozeman features newer neighborhoods, commerce and the outdoors
North Bozeman is an expansive residential and commercial area about 2 miles from downtown, speckled with parks and open spaces. “The vast majority of the new development occurring in the city has been off to the northwest side. The area is relatively flat, so it’s very suitable for the construction of neighborhoods and homes,” says Mark Meissner, a sales associate with ERA Landmark Real Estate, who has over 15 years of experience. “All of these neighborhoods are very amenitized with their own parks and pedestrian corridors. It creates a really nice outdoor environment and experience, and you’re still right in town.”
Diverse housing, from single-family homes to condos
The area’s subdivisions are lined with a variety of homes accompanied by grassy front lawns and driveways. Contemporary single-story homes from the 2000s to 2010s are common. Some have a traditional design, while others sport Craftsman features such as front gables, steep pointed roofs and a front porch. Prices range from $620,000 to $770,000. There are also contemporary two-story homes from the 1990s to 2010s and New Traditional multistory homes from the 2010s to 2020s. Some have a farmhouse influence, while others have a more modern design with sloped roofs and black trim. These properties cost between $550,000 and $1.2 million, depending on property size, age and features. “[They] offer a really wide range of housing types, from your most basic entry-level, single-family home to more estate-like homes and condos,” Meissner says. “The city really encourages mixed development. They want to see communities that have many different types of housing and price points.”
Townhouses and condos offer additional housing options. There are multistory, attached units, and single-level units available within a complex. Some units are from the 1990s while others are new construction. These are priced around $300,000 to $680,000 based on the number of levels and bedrooms. Apartment complexes are also found in the neighborhood. Over half of North Bozeman’s residents are renters.
North Bozeman’s parks and recreational facilities
Multiple parks are scattered around North Bozeman. Gallatin County Regional Park is known for having a dinosaur-themed playground and dog park. Multi-use trails surround the park’s two ponds and are used for skiing in the winter. According to Meissner, the amphitheater will also get used as a sledding hill. Rose Park is nearby and has a 9-hole disc golf course. To the east, Glen Lake Rotary Park has 3 miles of trails following the East Gallatin River. “Bozeman Beach” is a sandy area along the park’s lake that allows swimming, paddleboarding and fishing. The area also has volleyball courts, picnic pavilions and a climbing rock.
Bozeman Sports Park is an 80-acre athletic complex with four grass fields and two artificial turf fields. The park often hosts soccer and lacrosse tournaments. Riverside Country Club is a private organization, where members have access to an 18-hole golf course and outdoor pool. Its Raquet Sport Facility includes seven tennis courts and four pickleball courts. Nearby, the Bridger Creek Golf Course is open to the public.
Multiple shopping centers on 19th Avenue
North Bozeman’s commercial corridor along 19th Avenue serves as one of the city’s larger areas for retail and dining. Several hotel chains and industrial sites are located right off the Interstate 90 exit. Gallatin Center has WinCo Foods and stores like Target and Bob Ward’s Sports & Outdoors. Fast-food options in the area include Five Guys and Domino’s.
About a mile south along 19th Ave is Bridger Peaks Town Center, which has Smith’s as another option for groceries. National retailers include T.J. Maxx and Famous Footwear. Wasabi Japanese Steakhouse is a local restaurant serving hibachi-style dishes, and Thai Basil is next door. Stonebridge Square is another commercial center across the street, with REI and World Market. There are multiple chain restaurants in the area, like Olive Garden and IHOP.
Getting educated in the Bozeman Public School District
North Bozeman is served by Bozeman Public Schools. The area is zoned to three elementary schools: Whittier, Emily Dickinson and Hawthorne. Whittier Elementary School earns a B grade from Niche and enrolls most of the neighborhood. From there, students head to Chief Joseph Middle School and Gallatin High School – both receive A-minuses. The high school offers Career Pathways programs in automotive technology, medical careers and welding and metals manufacturing.
Traveling in and around North Bozeman by bus, car or plane
Multi-use trails crisscross through many of North Bozeman’s neighborhoods, creating a semi-cyclist-friendly community. When it comes to public transportation, Streamline Bus services have stops along 19th Avenue, Oak Street and Tschache Lane. Interstate 90 travels northwest and southwest through the area. “It’s pretty easy, direct access to get onto I-90 and get to the airport,” Meissner says. “One of the things people love about Bozeman is the connectivity to other areas in Montana.” The Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport is roughly 8 miles away.
