University Park offers high-end homes nestled among rolling fairways

University Park is a gated golf course community where high-end homes are perched alongside rolling fairways in the Sarasota suburbs. The neighborhood is centered around the University Park Country Club, just a few miles from several large shopping centers, and 7 miles from Sarasota’s downtown district. Residents enjoy quiet, walkable streets that wind around golf greens and small lakes. “It’s the closest gated golf community to Downtown Sarasota, and about 10 minutes from the airport,” says Realtor Bernadette Caswell of Michael Saunders & Company, who has lived in the neighborhood for more than a decade. “But what really makes it stand out is the friendliness of the community. It’s very warm and welcoming.”

Homes on lakes, with mature trees and landscaped lawns

The homes were built in the 1990s and early 2000s, and the neighborhood includes traditional and Mediterranean Revival-style homes. Brick-paved driveways, attached garages and lush, landscaped lawns are a common sight throughout the neighborhood. The neighborhood is dotted with mature trees and small lakes, offering a park-like setting for residents. “It’s a low-speed limit area with lots of beautiful landscaping and oak trees and palmettos. There are gas lantern streetlights throughout the whole neighborhood, which is very unusual and unique,” Caswell says. Prices range from as low as $300,000 to as high as $2.2 million, with large, renovated homes selling for the highest prices, and smaller homes selling at the low end. A handful of townhomes are also available for those who want less upkeep. The neighborhood receives a 2 out of 10 Cap Index Crime Score, compared to a national average of 4. Summers on the Gulf Coast can be extremely hot, and temperatures often exceed 100 degrees.

Country club offers golf, tennis and lakeside walking trails

University Park Country Club boasts a 27-hole golf course, which has been awarded a four-star rating by Golf Digest. It also offers a clubhouse, tennis courts, pickleball courts, a fitness center and croquet. Walking trails extend out from the country club into the surrounding neighborhoods, so residents don’t need to drive to get there. Other nearby outdoor destinations include renowned beaches on Florida’s Gulf Coast, some of which are less than 10 miles away. It’s also just 2 miles from Nathan Benderson Park, a popular green space that surrounds a 400-acre lake. The park is known for its annual rowing regatta and recently hosted the 2017 World Rowing Championships.

Local schools earn solid ratings and offer diverse clubs

Students start their education at Robert E. Willis Elementary School, which earns an A-minus rating from Niche. The next steps are B-rated Braden River Middle School, followed by B-plus-rated Braden River High School. The high school graduation rate is 93%, which is above the statewide average, and just over 60% of graduates continue to a four-year college. The school offers dozens of clubs spanning a wide variety of topics, ranging from a branch of the International Thespian Society to a chapter of the Future Farmers of America.

University Town Center offers dining, groceries and retail

University Park is conveniently located approximately 2 miles from University Town Center, a sprawling shopping and dining area featuring an indoor mall, restaurants, big-box stores and major grocery chains. Tandoor Fine Indian Cuisine is a local favorite for its spicy Indian dishes, while Yard House offers classic American cuisine complemented by a full bar. Al Forno Lebanese Grill is also nearby for authentic Mediterranean fare, including falafel and shawarma. Grocery stores in the area include Publix and Trader Joe’s, while everyday goods are found at Target and Walmart.

Suburban setting with a nearby airport and medical center

University Park is car-centric due to its suburban location. However, those who prefer public transportation can catch the bus from University Parkway. Within the neighborhood, residents can walk thanks to its quiet streets and well-maintained sidewalks. “It’s walkable, bikeable and very golf-cart-friendly,” Caswell says. It’s about 7 miles from the Sarasota Bradenton International Airport and 5 miles from Lakewood Ranch Medical Center.
