Named for a former judge who served as president of the Florida and National School Board Associations in the 1950s, Robert Willis Elementary School is in the Manatee County school district. Nearly 800 students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade attend the home of the Geckos.
The public school’s vision is “to promote and foster student achievement by providing an academically enriching environment that nurtures and supports the whole child.”
Students’ average test scores and student progress are well above the state average.
Every quarter, outstanding students who demonstrate the Eight Keys of Excellence – including Integrity and Speak with Good Purpose – receive Gecko Awards during an assembly. The Purposeful People program teaches a different character trait each month. A few of the featured traits are creativity, responsibility and gratitude.
An active Parent Teacher Organization helps run events throughout the year, such as the Walk-a-Thon fundraiser, Holiday Shoppe and the twice-a-year book fair.
Willis Elementary has a mandatory uniform policy, and it offers bus service and a before- and after-school program through the county school system. Situated near the major thoroughfare of University Parkway, the school is in a residential area.
