Tourists, part-timers and retirees coexist in Southwest Branson
Southwest Branson offers a lively location on Table Rock Lake. Locals can drive golf carts to Moonshine Beach, the city’s only public sand shoreline. Several eclectic restaurants and entertainment centers are also in the area. Though these tourist attractions attract part-time residents and vacationers, Southwest Branson is still a place where people want to put down roots. “Most people originally come here on vacation,” says Jim Stephenson, the broker-owner of Branson House Realty, who has lived in town since 1997. “Then, they buy a house for their families to spend the summer near the water, and, eventually, people move here full-time when they retire.” Southwest Branson is also about 4 miles south of The Strip, the city’s theater district. “You’re really at the center of all things Branson in this area,” Stephenson says.
Southwest Branson is renter-heavy
Housing here includes ranch styles, New Traditionals and contemporary styles. Oak and sycamore trees often shade grassy lawns, with the median lot size slightly over a quarter-acre. Some properties have lake views, and others overlook the rolling Ozark Mountains. Houses often have driveways leading to garages and two to nine bedrooms. Though nearly half the residents here rent, the median single-family home price is around $849,000, which is almost double the national median. Smaller homes can start at $160,000, while larger homes closer to the lake can cost over $1 million. The area also has a few condos, with prices ranging from around $215,000 to about $245,000. There are also several high-rise hotels and a few campgrounds with tents, cabins and RV sites.
Moonshine Beach also has a boat launch
In the summer, people pack golf carts with umbrellas, towels and coolers before heading to Moonshine Beach, which attracts more than 5 million visitors annually. “On a nice day, the beach is elbow-to-elbow,” Stephenson says. “Most people will go once when they first visit the lake and never go again.” However, locals will frequently use the beach’s boat launch. “It’s centrally located near a lot of cool places,” Stephenson says. Boaters going south will pass the 6,400-foot-long Table Rock Dam and the Showboat Branson Belle if it's docked. Westbound, the Ashe Juniper Natural Area is a forested island where anglers often drop an anchor to catch largemouth bass. Table Rock Lake State Park, about 5 miles south, has waterfront hiking trails, more boat launches and a full-service marina. The 18-hole Pointe Royale Golf Course, less than 2 miles south, is situated within a resort, but public tee times are available. Southwest Branson also has a few tourist entertainment spots, including The Freedom Encounter Theater, which puts on plays about American history.
Public schools earn B-plus grades or higher
Branson Public Schools serve White River. Kids can go to prekindergarten through kindergarten at Cedar Ridge Primary, which Niche grades a B-plus, and first through third grade at Cedar Ridge Elementary, which earns an A-minus. They may continue to Cedar Ridge Intermediate, Branson Junior High and Branson High, all earning B pluses. The high school offers elective classes like personal finance, child development and business law.
Southwest Branson has several tourist restaurants
Southwest Branson is home to several restaurants, many of which are popular with tourists. “Because water access is so close, you can barely get a table at these places,” Stephenson says. “Especially after 5, when everyone is getting off their boats.” Families pack into red and white checkered tablecloth-covered booths at Danna's Bar-B-Que & Burger Shop, known for its hickory-smoked ribs and fried catfish plates. Dollar bills and murals of jungle animals decorate Crazy Craig's Cheeky Monkey Bar, a popular dance club with a DJ or band every night. Grocery stores like Country Mart and Harter House are about 10 miles east. Branson Landing, less than 8 miles east, is an outdoor shopping center with over 100 stores, including Bass Pro Shops and Belk. The Cox Medical Center, Branson’s hospital, is also in the area.
Cars and golf carts share the road here
Though residents and vacationers often drive golf carts around the area, Southwest Branson is a car-dependent community. State Route 165 loops around the city’s west side. A 4-mile drive north on the highway reaches The Strip, home to places like Dolly Parton’s Stampede and the Titanic Museum Attraction. Branson Airport, about 17 miles southeast, offers some flights with Sun Country Airlines, while Springfield-Branson National Airport, 58 miles north, is served by more airlines.
